DevonHouse Senior Living of Allentown Triumphs Over Superstorm Sandy

Devonhouse Senior Living's staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to prep for the big storm and help residents during power outages.

2012-11-14
DOLYESTOWN, PA, November 14, 2012 (Press-News.org) A Few Words About the Tremendous Efforts of Our Staff and Volunteers During a Major "Event" at DevonHouse:

Preparations for Superstorm Sandy began here at DevonHouse long before the storm arrived. As it became clear that the storm would affect the Lehigh Valley, our staff went into action. On Friday, October 26, departments increased their orders of food, water, and other essential supplies, and the call went out to employees for added staffing.

As the storm neared on Monday, we reviewed the emergency checklist and made sure that our emergency supplies, including a large generator, fire alarm backup batteries, flashlights, walkie talkies, and weather radios were all operational.

At 8:00 p.m. on Monday night the power failed, and our emergency plan went into action. All residents were provided high powered LED flashlights for lighting their rooms and on-call staff were called in to provide added care and rounds through the night.

Early Tuesday morning, we received word from Salisbury EMA that the power could be out for six days. We ordered extra oxygen and continued with our emergency plan. We were so fortunate to have family and friends helping with entertainment during the day. Our power went back on Thursday.

DevnHouse would like to offer our sincere thanks to our wonderful staff who carried us through the storm so well, and also to our exceptional volunteers who donated their time, especially Brian Snyder, who assisted with maintenance for twelve hours, lent his personal generator, and drove to pick up more generators; Morgan Snyder and Larry Boone, who picked up a generator in Reading, PA; and Chuck Howard, who drove from Lehighton to lend his personal generator.

DevonHouse of Allentown is the Lehigh Valley's foremost senior living residence. Nestled in a park like setting, DevonHouse offers professional nursing care supervised by on-site licensed nurses in a home-like setting twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week; a variety of social, spiritual and educational opportunities; and exceptional private and companion accommodations. http://www.devonhouseseniorliving.com
