RALEIGH, NC, November 29, 2012 (Press-News.org) The North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association (www.ncvma.org) has announced the release of a podcast discussing issues with animal diabetes. Dr. Scott Helms, DVM, Diplomate ABVP, of the Veterinary Referral Hospital of Hickory in Hickory, N.C., shares advice on how to recognize animal diabetes, discusses the major symptoms of the disease and provides steps to helping pets overcome diabetes. In addition, Dr. Helms provides insight into the breeds and ages of pets that are most likely to develop diabetes, as well as the most prevalent type of diabetes in pets. Often, symptoms of diabetes can be very similar to symptoms of other conditions, and may be difficult to diagnose. Dr. Helms emphasizes that diabetes is not uncommon and it is crucial for pet owners to have their pets lab tested if any of the common symptoms are detected. The podcast is available to download, here http://bit.ly/UT68X3.
QUOTES:
"Although certain breeds are more genetically prone to diabetes, most types of dogs and cats can be diagnosed with the disease," said Dr. Helms. "We must pay attention to our pets' diet habits and behaviors, such as drinking too much water or urinating too often, in order to recognize that they might have this illness. The importance of lab testing should not be taken lightly, for it must be done in order for pets to receive necessary insulin shots for treatment."
