12 Things to See and Do in Bermuda - by Headwater

We all know that visiting a country is the only way to really ever get under its skin and understand what makes it "tick". Headwater has listed the 12 most things to see and do during your holiday in Bermuda.

2010-10-27
SURREY, ENGLAND, October 27, 2010 (Press-News.org) 1: If you can manage the 82-step descent, then a guided tour of Bermuda's incredible Crystal Caves shouldn't be missed. As you follow the floating walkway, your guide will relay the history and geology of the caves, as well as pointing out stalagmites and stalactites resembling an alligator, the Manhattan skyline and, apparently, Bob Marley's face!

2: Located a mile from the islands' capital, Hamilton, the 36-acre Botanical Gardens are the largest public gardens on Bermuda. Highlights include the Palm Garden, Rose Garden, Frangipani Collection and the fragrant Sensory Garden - primarily designed for the blind with all signs in Braille. It is thought that John Lennon named his final album, "Double Fantasy", after a freesia he spotted here in 1980.

3: For an unrivalled view of picturesque Hamilton, it's well worth the $5 fee to climb to the top of the spire of the impressive neo-Gothic cathedral on Church Street.

4: The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI) is a real interactive museum with historic diving exhibits and a gold coin collection collated from items found in Spanish galleons shipwrecked on Bermuda's shores. It's not for the squeamish though: a life-size replica on a 500lb, 27ft-long squid hangs in the reception hall!

5: Cross the world's smallest drawbridge - just 30-inches - and visit Somerset Island!

6: Swim with Dolphins at the Royal Naval Dockyard Leisure Complex, one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island. The Maritime Museum, with its extensive collection of artefacts and historic pieces, can also be found here.

7: Enjoy a tipple at Bermuda's only microbrewery located in the tiny Smith's Parish

8: The unfortunately named 64-acre Spittal Pond Nature Reserve is without doubt the best bird-watching site on Bermuda. Look out for the kiskadee, white-eyed vireo and solitary flamingo!

9: Climb the 185 steps of the world's tallest lighthouse (117ft) for unrivalled views across the western coast. Even Queen Elizabeth II stopped to admire the vista here during her state visit in 1953 - there's still the plaque marking the spot!

10: Watch the sunset over Horseshoe Bay - arguably the most beautiful beach in the world - whilst sipping a "dark n stormy" (rum mixed two-to-one with ginger beer!) and practising being a local!

11: Sheltered by unusual Dali-esque limestone rock formations, Tobacco Bay is a haven for tropical colourful fish, and its calm, limpid waters make it a great spot for snorkelling.

12: And, finally, when it's time to go home, enjoy the sounds of the live bands often brought in to the airport to help ease the sorrow of leaving the magical island of Bermuda!
