HOUSTON, TX, April 01, 2013 (Press-News.org) April 1 marks the first day of national Distracted Driving Awareness Month and the first day that sophomore, junior, and senior students at Lamar, Reagan, Austin, and Yates High Schools can enter the Text Free Texas Scholarship Program. Sponsored by the Houston law firm of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Sorrels, Agosto & Friend, the scholarship program is intended to promote awareness about the dangers of texting while driving, particularly among teens, and encourage teen drivers not to use their cell phones while behind the wheel of a vehicle.
A total of four $250 scholarships will be awarded through the Text Free Texas Scholarship Program. To be eligible for consideration, students in grades 10-12 at Lamar, Reagan, Austin, or Yates High School must submit a pledge no longer than 150 words about why they will not text and drive on the firm's Facebook or Google+ page. At the end of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, one student from each of the four high schools will be chosen by the firm to receive a $250 scholarship.
Saving A Life And Preparing For The Future Has Never Been This Easy.
Did you know that in 2011 alone, 81,000, or about one of every four, car crashes in Texas were caused by distracted drivers? Using a cell phone to talk, text, email or surf the web while behind the wheel is one of the leading causes of driver distractions. You can stop this, you can make a difference:
- Put down your phone while you are driving.
- Encourage your friends and family members to put down their phones while driving.
- Tell us, between April 1 and April 30, why you won't text and drive.
It's That Simple.
Motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death among teens nationwide; distracted driving accidents caused by a texting driver are 100 percent preventable. As a Texas personal injury law firm, Abraham Watkins has seen the consequences of texting and driving. In an instant, a distracted driver can cause a crash that may result in serious and even fatal injuries.
Each one of us can take a stand to stop tragic accidents caused by distracted driving. All you have to do is stop the texts. Don't text while driving. Don't read texts while driving. A text is not worth a life.
Make a difference. Save a life. Put down your phone and help Abraham Watkins make this a Text Free Texas.
