The Waters Edge Cinema Present's "Science On Screen," A Four-Day Mini-Festival On April 19-April 22 (Earth Day)

PROVINCETOWN, MA, April 10, 2013 (Press-News.org) The Waters Edge Cinema will present "SCIENCE ON SCREEN," a four-day mini-festival that runs from April 19th through April 22nd (Earth Day), 2013, featuring new films (FUTURE WEATHER; CHASING ICE; TRASHED) and old (the 1956 classic MOBY DICK) about nature and ecology, screened digitally in the Cinema's renovated home, 237 Commercial St., 2nd floor. This Coolidge Corner Theatre Initiative is presented by the Provincetown Film Society in partnership with the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies, Appearances: Provincetown Green Arts Festival, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and the Sage Inn & Lounge; and was made possible by major support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

The program begins on Friday, April 19 at 7:45 p.m. with FUTURE WEATHER, a coming-of-age drama written and directed by Jenny Deller about a 13-year-old loner, Lauduree (Perla Haney-Jardine), who is passionate about nature and obsessed with environmental disaster. Her single mom (Marin Ireland) is a dreamer and her grandmother (Amy Madigan) is a fiery nurse jaded by alcohol and disappointment. When her mom abandons her for a career in Hollywood, Lauduree takes a leap into the unknown. Lili Taylor plays Lauduree's science teacher and role model, who nurtures her interest in climate change. Special Guest Speakers: writer-director Jenny Deller and actor Lili Taylor.

The following day, Saturday, April 20, at 2:00 p.m., is time for John Huston's 1956 adaptation of Herman Melville's classic whaling novel, MOBY DICK. Gregory Peck plays Captain Ahab, who is monomaniacal is his quest for a giant white sperm whale, and a young Richard Basehart plays the inexperienced crewman, Ishmael, who narrates the tale. Special Guest Speaker: Dr. Charles "Stormy" Mayo, Cofounder and Director of the Habitat Studies Program at the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies.

That evening, Saturday, April 20 at 7:00 p.m., the feature presentation is WHALING CITY, the story of an independent fisherman who must fight to save his boat, his livelihood, and his way of life. Directed by Jay Burke. Special Guest Speaker: director Jay Burke.

On Sunday, April 21 at 2:00 p.m., the festival will screen the new and award-winning documentary, CHASING ICE, directed by Jeff Orlowski. The film follows National Geographic photographer James Balog across the Arctic as he captures a multiyear record of the world's rapidly diminishing glaciers and ice pack. Special Guest Speaker: Dr. Mark Borrelli, Director of the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies Marine Geology Program.

A special program called WHALE RESEARCH AND RESCUE is scheduled for Sunday, April 21 at 5:00 p.m. This includes up-close footage of the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies at work disentangling endangered whales, shot from the head-cams of those involved. Also featured is the 2007 documentary OCEAN VOYAGERS, codirected by PCCS colleague Feodor Pitcairn and narrated by Meryl Streep, which follows a newborn humpback whale calf and his 40-foot-long mother on a 7,000-mile journey. Special Guest Speaker: Scott Landry, Director of the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies Marine Animal Disentanglement Program.

Closing out the festival, on Monday, April 22 (Earth Day) at 2:00 p.m., is the new documentary TRASHED, starring Jeremy Irons, who travels in the film around the world to beautiful destinations tainted by pollution, exploring the extent and effects of global waste. This meticulous, brave journey takes Irons (and viewers) from skepticism to sorrow to horror and finally to hope. Directed by Candida Brady. Special Guest Speakers: Laura Ludwig, Project Director for the Marine Debris Program, and Jesse Mechling, Marine Education Director, both from the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies.
