Everybody enjoys good looking art on their walls. Coincidentally, everybody also seems to enjoy having family members photographs on the same walls. In years past you simply separated the two, but these days wall art and photography are being combined in the form of a canvas. Kansas City photographer Todd Davidson has seen their popularity rise in the last couple years and has decided to make it one of his specialties."Canvases are really cool," Davidson comments, "They're like a painting pulled over the top of a wood frame. They look cool, they're artsy and they're in. Kansas City photographers love them because once a canvas is finished you can hang it up on a wall right away, without having to buy a border frame, and it looks great. You can put it right alongside any paintings or wall art and it fits right in."
Davidson's goal is to be a Kansas City photographer willing to take his skills to whole new level. He goes on to say, "Why just have a family picture on the wall? Canvases give the same picture a whole new look. I hear customers say all the time that their family and friends all comment on a canvas picture - even if they have a lot of really great other photos up on the wall. They just stick out, in a really good way. It's a great way to take photography to a whole new level."
In the last few years Davidson and other Kansas City photographers have seen demand for canvas photography increase significantly. He attributes part of the demand to the aesthetics of the product, the rest to a big drop in canvas pricing in recent times. He recently finished a 30"x50" family portrait canvas for a well known Kansas City family and is already planning a shoot that will involve a series of canvases strung together. "There are just so many possibilities," Davidson says in closing, "you can do a family portrait, senior photograph, your wedding - anything. And it looks awesome. I mean, I'm about to do a project involving a 2 year old in a leather jacket in front of an airplane. Why wouldn't you want one? If you're going to be a successful Kansas City photographer, you've got to stay on your toes."
Davidson's eye for photography and willingness to combine it with different forms of art is something he feels sets him apart from other Kansas City photographers. With the increase in business he's experienced these last few years and the number of canvas projects ever increasing his opinion seems justified.
