The Medical Benefits Of Botox

2010-10-17
Beyond the aesthetic benefits, Botox has recently been approved for the prevention of chronic migraines. This news comes after a trial of more than 1,300 patients showed that Botox dramatically helps in reducing the frequency of headaches. Lee Tomkins, the Director of Migraine Action, stresses that Botox is not a "cure" but he goes on to say, "if they (migraine sufferers) get half the attacks, it can really improve their quality of life." Botox is becoming more and more popular every year with both men and women. Botox in Wilmslow and Botox in Cheshire are also very ...

2010-10-17

Assembly lawmakers then approved the changes to the bill, Assembly Bill 2144 and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the bill into law on August 30th. Proposed FAA Regulations: Another Day, Another Hour

2010-10-17
In February 2009, Colgan Air flight 3407 crashed into a Buffalo, New York home, killing all 49 people on board and one person on the ground. According to ABC, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) ruled that pilot error was a chief cause of the crash; pilot fatigue was an issue, according to one investigation into the crash. Pilot Fatigue Pilots are currently required to have eight hours of rest between work days, meaning they can work up to 16 hours in a day. ABC News says that pilots have complained for years that eight hours of rest is insufficient. As ...

The Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 2010

2010-10-17
Koua Fong Lee spent three years in prison after he was convicted of vehicular homicide. According to Minnesota Public Radio, in 2006 Lee's vehicle hit three other cars stopped at a red light, killing three people. As Lee's position had always been that he tried to brake but that his 1996 Toyota Camry suddenly accelerated, Judge Joanne Smith granted Lee a new trial after hearing testimony from other Camry owners of similar experiences and other evidence. Prosecutors have announced that they will not seek a new trial. While Lee's story may be unique, the injuries and fatalities ...

2010-10-17
There are more than 46.5 million Medicare recipients in the United States, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Of those, 1,636,281 are Michigan residents. Some of these current recipients, and those who will be eligible in the future, have other payer policies available to them, such as workers' compensation. If a Medicare recipient receives a workers' compensation settlement for an on-the-job injury, questions may arise about the worker's duty to pay Medicare for future medical treatment. What Is a Medicare Set-Aside? A Medicare Set-Aside (MSA) or Medicare ...

Missouri School Bus Crash Restarts Seat Belt Debate

2010-10-17
The state of Missouri has more than 12,000 school buses to transport over a half-million schoolchildren every day. The recent deadly school bus crash in Franklin County prompted parents across the state to ask why every child on every Missouri school bus isn't protected by a seat belt. The early August crash near Gray Summit killed two, including a 15-year-old high school student on her way with classmates to the nearby Six Flags theme park. CBS News reported that the wreck apparently began when a pick-up truck rear-ended a semi-truck that slowed to enter a road construction ...

A Primer on California Motorcycle Safety

2010-10-17
Even though autumn is upon us, it is never too late to think about motorcycle safety. Yes, more motorcycle riders are on the roads in the summertime, but with California's temperate climate, they can be seen any time of the year. It is important for both motorcyclists and passenger/commercial vehicle operators to be aware of the inherent dangers of sharing the road and for each to take steps to avoid accidents whenever possible. Safety Programs Are Having an Impact The year 2009 saw a marked decrease in the number of motorcyclist fatalities for the first time since ...

Cell Phone Crackdown in Tennessee Prisons Points to Larger Problem

2010-10-17
A recent story in The Tennessean discusses a crackdown by prison authorities on the presence of cell phones in state prisons. They have been successful in using dogs to sniff out the phones, as apparently the batteries give off an odor the dogs can detect. Cell phones are prohibited for prisoners, as they provide an easy means for them to keep in contact with the outside. They also present a safety threat to correctional officers in prisons. The shooting of Officer Mark Chestnut on I-40 was the result of a prison escape facilitated by a cell phone. Prison authorities ...

Juveniles No Longer Eligible for Life Without Parole?

2010-10-17
How the Graham Decision Affects Texas Juveniles Even though Texas is viewed around the country as a state that has fast-tracked capital punishment, Texas appears to be a bit kinder when it comes to juveniles. Having already outlawed the death penalty for juveniles, as of September 1, 2009, Texas also has outlawed life sentences without the possibility of parole for juveniles convicted of capital murder. In explaining why he introduced the bill, Texas State Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa stated that "[l]ife without parole, to me that's very cruel in the sense that they're ...

Yet this protein complex is essential to mitosis, the process by which a living cell separates its chromosomes and distributes them equally between its two daughter cells. Now, through a combination of cryo-electron microscopy and three-dimensional image reconstruction, a team of researchers with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and the University of California (UC) Berkeley have produced a subnanometer resolution model of human Ndc80 that reveals ...

UC Riverside physicists pave the way for graphene-based spin computer

UC Riverside physicists pave the way for graphene-based spin computer
2010-10-15
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Physicists at the University of California, Riverside have taken an important step forward in developing a "spin computer" by successfully achieving "tunneling spin injection" into graphene. An electron can be polarized to have a directional orientation, called "spin." This spin comes in two forms – electrons are said to be either "spin up" or "spin down" – and allows for more data storage than is possible with current electronics. Spin computers, when developed, would utilize the electron's spin state to store and process vast amounts of information ...
