TOULON, FRANCE, January 01, 2011 (Press-News.org) Despite effective antiretroviral therapy, HIV persists in long-term latent reservoirs, making the hope for a cure as pipe dreams.
In 2003, together with Professors Robert Gallo from Baltimore (USA), Roger Pomerantz from Philadelphia (USA) and Mario Stevenson from Worcester (USA) we launched the First Workshop on HIV Persistence, ( http://www.hiv-reservoir.net/ ) HIV Reservoirs and Eradication Strategies. This workshop was a blast and scientists actively discussed their findings and the ways research has to be done.
We are committed to understanding the mechanisms of ( http://www.hiv-reservoir.net/ ) HIV persistence in treated individuals and finding a 'sterilizing cure' or a 'functional cure' within the next decade.
The next workshop will be held December 6-11, 2011 in Saint Martin (West Indies). Between 2 workshops, the group will join their forces to boost research on these topics.
We have also lately launched a Web Portal to strengthen the link between researchers in the world. This website offers news, articles, discussions, and interviews of renowned specialists.
On December 28, 2010 we posted an interesting interview from Professor Anthony Fauci, Director of the NIAID. In this interview, we asked Pr. Fauci his opinion about where research is going in this field:
