Metro Health Nursing Council Names Dr. Kevin Furlong Physician of the Year for 2013

Metro Health Hospital has named Dr. Kevin Furlong its 2013 Nursing-Chosen Physician of the Year.

WYOMING, MI, May 22, 2013

Metro Health Hospital has named Dr. Kevin Furlong its 2013 Nursing-Chosen Physician of the Year.

The award is given annually by Metro Health's Professional Nursing Council, or PNC, to recognize a physician who exemplifies best practices and who also supports the role of nurses as part of the healthcare team. The hospital's clinical nursing staff proposes candidates, and nominations are reviewed by the 13-member PNC, with the recipient selected by secret ballot.

Furlong serves as Metro's chief of staff. He is board-certified in internal medicine and practices at Metro Health as a hospitalist. "Dr. Ninja," as he is affectionately known, has an uncanny ability to appear when nurses and staff need him most. He has been called "dedicated, kind, attentive and respectful" in all his dealings with patients, family and staff who has "exceptional bedside manner."

His nomination form noted: "Patients really like Dr. Furlong. Patients and family members are able to 'teach back' information' he has shared with them, which is a great indicator of his superb communication skills. His physician 'presence' encourages patient-centered discussions and promotes an environment for collaboration and teamwork. He is like the big brother who will always have your back."

Furlong received his medical degree from the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City, Mo. He completed his internship and internal medicine residency at Metro Health.
