Police Chief Brian Kilcullen and the department's assistant chiefs saluted the honorees who were joined inside the GE Theater at Proctors by proud family and friends. The Police Benevolent Association provided refreshments.Thomas Saccenti Kelleys Island Police Officers Honored

In handing out unit citation awards, Kilcullen praised the department's communications unit as "the unsung heroes in public safety" for their mostly behind-the-scenes but integral work.

Of evidence technicians, the chief noted that on one occasion they processed a murder scene for over two weeks, one of the roughly 1,200 cases a year they handle, often "making cases solvable that might not otherwise be solvable."

Bennet said the department handles about 250 calls a day for everything from plumbing problems to murder.

"Nobody does it better than the Schenectady Police Department," he proclaimed.

Keeping the water in backyard ponds and water gardens clean and clear can be a challenge, especially in summer when the sun gets more intense and temperatures start to rise.
