At an awards ceremony Wednesday, Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett recalled the bravery of those and other members of the city police department recognized at this year's Valor Day ceremony for putting their lives on the line and exemplary work in serving and protecting the community. Police Chief Brian Kilcullen and the department's assistant chiefs saluted the honorees who were joined inside the GE Theater at Proctors by proud family and friends. The Police Benevolent Association provided refreshments.Thomas Saccenti Kelleys Island Police Officers Honored

In handing out unit citation awards, Kilcullen praised the department's communications unit as "the unsung heroes in public safety" for their mostly behind-the-scenes but integral work.

Of evidence technicians, the chief noted that on one occasion they processed a murder scene for over two weeks, one of the roughly 1,200 cases a year they handle, often "making cases solvable that might not otherwise be solvable."

Bennet said the department handles about 250 calls a day for everything from plumbing problems to murder.

"Nobody does it better than the Schenectady Police Department," he proclaimed.
