NORCROSS, GA, May 30, 2013 (Press-News.org) The homeless shelters in Atlanta, Atlanta Mission, want to remind city residents that they offer an easy way for people to donate to their cause. The Atlanta homeless shelters have launched an online shop-to-give store that has proven to be instrumental in their mission to end homelessness in the city.
The virtual store eliminates the need for residents to physically drive to the shelter to donate goods, as the entire process is handled automatically. The Atlanta homeless shelters have made the website very user-friendly by showing visitors exactly what products they are in need of as well as the progress made toward their donation goals.
Atlanta Mission has seen an increase in the number of overall donations. According to Josh Deyton, Director of External Marketing of Atlanta Mission, "We appreciate every donation we receive, and wanted to make the process as simple as possible. Giving people the ability to see exactly what we need allows us to effectively accommodate the individuals in our facilities ."
The Atlanta Homeless Shelters Use Social Media, Too
The shop-to-give store is a perfect example of how technology can have a positive and powerful impact on local communities. The homeless shelters in Atlanta recognize how essential it is to reach out to the greatest number of people. This need is now being met thanks to social media. A built-in plug-in is presented directly on the store's homepage, allowing viewers to visit the company's Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn pages.

Advanced paper could be foundation for inexpensive biomedical and diagnostic devices
2013-05-29
Paper is known for its ability to absorb liquids, making it ideal for products such as paper towels. But by modifying the underlying network of cellulose fibers, etching off surface "fluff" and applying a thin chemical coating, researchers have created a new type of paper that repels a wide variety of liquids – including water and oil.
The paper takes advantage of the so-called "lotus effect" – used by leaves of the lotus plant – to repel liquids through the creation of surface patterns at two different size scales and the application of a chemical coating. The material, ...

Heparan sulphates are found in nearly every cell of the body, and are similar to the natural blood-thinning drug, heparin. Now scientists have discovered how to produce them chemically ...
