Study Finds High Satisfaction Rate for Breast Augmentation Patients

A study published in the May 2013 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery finds a high satisfaction level among breast augmentation patients. Seattle plastic surgery specialist Dr. Wandra K. Miles says this parallels trends at her practice.

2013-06-01
SEATTLE, WA, June 01, 2013 (Press-News.org) New research is giving high marks to breast enlargement surgery, which is no surprise to Seattle plastic surgery specialist Dr. Wandra K. Miles.

A study published in the May 2013 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery , the journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), evaluated breast augmentation results from patients' perspectives. The study followed one doctor's breast augmentation patients over 5 years, and found that of the 225 patients interviewed, 91.1% reported increased self-esteem after their surgery, and 64.3% reported improved quality of life.

"These results do not surprise me at all," says Dr. Miles, a board-certified plastic surgeon practicing in Seattle and Alaska. "My breast augmentation patients are overwhelmingly satisfied with their results. Our industry has made great strides in improving the safety and aesthetics of breast augmentation procedures."

All but one of the women interviewed had saline implants placed under the muscle through inframammary incisions. Dr. Miles says that women who come to her for breast augmentation in Seattle or Alaska have the choice of saline or silicone gel implants. "I think that the variety of implant options available to women only increases patient satisfaction," Dr. Miles says.

More than 91% of the women surveyed reported that breast augmentation met or exceeded their expectations. The vast majority -- 98.7% -- indicated that they would repeat the surgery.

According to Dr. Miles, this level of surgical success may also have something to do with thorough patient screening on the part of cosmetic surgeons, a responsibility that extends to practitioners performing all plastic surgery procedures, she says.

Dr. Miles says she screens and counsels her patients carefully when they approach her for aesthetic procedures ranging from a face lift to a tummy tuck in Seattle.

"We should be ensuring that patients are in good physical and emotional health before any cosmetic procedure," she says. "In the case of this study, women who enter the operating room with unrealistic expectations about what breast surgery will do for them are not going to be satisfied with their results. These numbers don't just show the aesthetic success of breast augmentation; they show me that plastic surgeons are doing our jobs in advising our patients."

Dr. Wandra Miles is a board-certified plastic surgeon serving reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery patients in Seattle and surrounding communities. She offers a diverse range of procedures including tummy tuck, face lift, and breast reconstruction. Dr. Miles received her medical degree at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and completed her general surgical internship and residency at the Fletcher Allen Health Care Center at the University of Vermont. She then underwent two years of training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Colorado and completed an additional fellowship in microsurgery at the MD Anderson Cancer Center.
