Kai Lao, Director of R&D and Principal Scientist at Applied Biosystems of Life Technologies to Speak at NGS & Bioinformatics Summit Europe (Oct 7-8, 2013 in Berlin)

2013-06-09
MONROVIA, CA, June 09, 2013 (Press-News.org) Kai Lao, Director of R&D and Principal Scientist at Applied Biosystems of Life Technologies, will give a featured presentation on "Development and Applications of Single-Cell Transcriptome Analysis" at the NGS & Bioinformatics Summit Europe on October 7-8, 2013 in Berlin, Germany.

Cell development is driven and controlled by temporal and spatial changes in gene transcription, followed by translation of the resulting messenger RNAs into proteins. Recent advances in high throughput sequencing technology make it possible to obtain information on single cell transcriptomes at high resolution by RNA-Seq analysis, which can be instructive concerning how individual cells respond to signals and other environmental cues at critical stages of cell fate determination, or when they acquire aberrant phenotype. Essentially all cells within an individual organism share a virtually identical genotype, but the individual transcriptomes reflect expression of a subset of genes, which is determined by their epigenetic state, including DNA methylation and histone modifications. If these two copies of a gene are expressed at different levels, the quantities of messenger (mRNA) from individual alleles will differ. This phenomenon is called allele specific gene expression (ASE). Here, Dr. Kai Lao will look to discuss how they took advantage of recent technical and methodological advances concerning single cell RNA-Seq, to ASE within individual early mouse blastomeres.

Dr. Kai Lao is currently NGS R&D Director and Principal Scientist in Genetic Systems, Applied Biosystems, part of Life Technology. Prior joining Applied Biosytems/Life Technologies, he was employed as a visiting scientist at UC Berkeley and a senior scientist at Hoechst/SYVA to develop biotechnology in DNA detection/sequencing. Dr. Lao have authored and co-authored 50+ patents/patent applications and 50+ peer reviewed scientific papers.

The NGS & Bioinformatics Summit Europe gathers the foremost experts to present on leading-edge technology in next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics. The summit includes two parallel conferences including joint sessions featuring discussions on both research and clinical applications of NGS with its respective challenges, and technical aspects of NGS from a bioinformatics perspective and its practical applications; the opportunities and challenges in NGS dedicated to NGS-related topics, bioinformatics, and data management will all be covered.
