Space and Death Through the Eyes of a Child in Jeff Pinilla's 2nd Short Film
After 2 long years of writing and fundraising, Emmy Award Winning director Jeff Pinilla is set to debut his 2nd crowd-funded short film "The Earth, the way I left it."
NEW YORK, NY, June 10, 2013
The stories premise is as follows: A child, coping with death in the family, is visited by a stranger from the stars. The themes and subjects of the film touch on the way a child's imagination can protect them and the coping mechanisms children use to deal with death. The nostalgic and touching story of Alexandria, our protagonist, is one Jeff has been working on for over two years. While this isn't Jeff's first short film, it has been the most challenging. The film was funded by over 200 individuals through a 60 day fundraiser via website rockethub.com. Pinilla co-wrote the film with longtime friend Matthew Pourviseh, who also acted as producer. The film also introduced Jeff's longtime collaborator, Justin Simpson, as Director of Photography (Numbers on a napkin, 2011)On the technical side, the team decided to push the boundaries by using different techniques and tactics. On paper, the story feels very nostalgic and grandiose. In order to get the words to read on screen (keep in mind, the film has no dialogue) the team decided it was best to shoot in different formats. The Red Epic became the camera of choice while half of the film was also shot on Super 8mm film. This combination of old and new film technology along with set design and wardrobe choices reels the audience back to a time period reminiscent of home movies we all watched of ourselves as children. Through a mix of visual and practical effects, including an entire yard of polymer snow created by Jeff, Matt, and Justin, themselves, the audience can really experience the feeling of a child's imagination.
Pinilla, co-writer and director of the film, began writing this film while he finished his first short film, "Numbers on a Napkin." This film was featured at several film festivals including HBO's International Latino Film Festival. Between his film and work for Tribune Creative Group, Pinilla has been nominated for over 11 Emmys. Pinilla recently won an Emmy in April of 2013 for commercial work he did for Tribune Creative Group. Pinilla was also recognized in June of 2012 with the PROMAXBDA RON SCALERA ROCKET AWARD. This award is given to any individual with two years or less experience in commercial and marketing who is doing outstanding work.
"The Earth, the way I left it" stars Amelia Osborne, Justice Marshall, and Erik Roccapriore and is set to screen in early July in hopes to make the festival rounds through the year 2013 and early 2014.
