Air Force veterans may have been exposed to asbestos during service

2013-06-20
Tragically, military veterans of past U.S. conflicts continue to be diagnosed with a deadly form of cancer known as mesothelioma. For many of these victims, their conditions can be directly linked to asbestos exposure during their time in military service. And while veterans of some branches of the armed services were inherently more at risk to come into contact with asbestos during their service, none were completely safe, including members of the U.S. Air Force. Dangers of asbestos exposure Prior to the 1980s, asbestos could be found almost everywhere. In particular, ...

Laws impacting unpaid overtime in Utah

2013-06-20
Although some states have elected to create their own statutes regarding employee overtime, many states, including Utah, generally adhere to federal overtime laws in wage and hour disputes - specifically, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Under the FLSA, unless an employee is clearly exempted, he or she is entitled to receive overtime pay for any time worked in excess of 40 hours in a given week. In particular, the rate of pay for overtime hours must be at least one and one-half times an employee's regular pay rate. In addition, an agreement between an employer and ...

Unique Considerations In Military Divorce

2013-06-20
Military members face unique challenges in both their professional and personal lives. Long deployments make it challenging for some military members to stay in touch with their families and have been linked to a growing military divorce rate. Between 2001 and 2011, the divorce rate increased from 2.6 to 3.7 percent, though it dropped slightly to 3.5 percent in 2012. For female soldiers, the divorce rate is significantly higher -- at 9.4 percent. In response, some branches of the military have created workshops for couples in the military. The Marines, for example, provide ...

The Importance Of Establishing Paternity In Texas

2013-06-20
Under Texas laws, if a man and woman are not married and a child is born from their relationship, the child does not have a "legal" father. When this occurs, it is vital for the parents to sign an "Acknowledgement of Paternity" as soon as possible in order to protect both the child's and the father's legal rights. Completing the AOP at the time of birth is the easiest and most efficient way to handle the situation. If the parents complete the document at the hospital, the hospital will forward it to the Bureau of Vital Statistics, and the biological ...
