CHICAGO, IL, February 20, 2014 (Press-News.org) The 2013/2014 Saturday Academy - PREP Program has been an exciting year for the PREP students. The students take part in several competitions to expose them to science, technology, engineering, and math activities. Currently, the students are preparing for the Ten80 Student Racing Challenge. The Ten80 Education Student Racing Challenge NASCAR STEM Initiative was developed to expose students to lessons in math and science. Electric radio controlled cars are used to educate students in STEM fields. Student teams are formed to collaborate, create and compete in a competition that simulates the NASCAR race. Student teams lead the challenge and are engaged in monthly challenges and races, chassis set-up investigations, aerodynamic design projects, mechanical design projects, renewable energy projects (solar, wind, hydrogen fuel cell), and robot car projects. Teams are required to manage the project. They are required to create a Business Plan, prepare an elevator speech and market the car. Students are also required to develop a public relations strategy and a public relations plan.

With the generous support of the CSU Foundation, Corporate and Foundation Donors, and the STEM disciplines at CSU, the program has motivated minority students to select career options in the STEM fields at universities across the country. The Pre-Freshman Program in Engineering and Science at Chicago State University has been selected as the 2014 Pre-College Program of the Year with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).The program will receive this honor at the 2014 NSBE Golden Torch Awards Ceremony, which will be held at the NSBE National Convention.
