San Diego Women's Chorus to Share Stage with Iconic Folk Duo Indigo Girls at Balboa Theater

May 18th Concert "Songs of Protest, Songs of Peace" to benefit Lesbian Health Initiative of the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation

2014-02-23
SAN DIEGO, CA, February 23, 2014 (Press-News.org) At 7 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2014, the iconic folk duo the Indigo Girls will join the San Diego Women's Chorus (SDWC) for an exclusive performance at the Balboa Theatre. This unprecedented concert Songs of Protest, Songs of Peace is a fundraising event benefiting the newly launched Lesbian Health Initiative of the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation.

Songs of Protest, Songs of Peace will draw from the music that embodied both the anger and optimism of America's social and political evolution in the 20th and 21st centuries. With songs from the labor, civil rights, anti-war, women's liberation and LGBT equality movements, the audience will experience the power of music to provoke, illuminate and inspire. SDWC will perform a diverse program of pop, gospel, musical theatre and choral selections that cover a range of topics including anti-bullying, Quaker pacifism and South African anti-apartheid history.

"San Diego Human Dignity Foundation is proud and pleased to support this landmark concert," said SDHDF Executive Director John Brown. "Songs of Protest, Songs of Peace promises to be a once in a lifetime event that entertains, enlightens and raises funds for the benefit of our lesbian community. This exciting concert will give our community the opportunity to support and enjoy the wonderful women's chorus on a whole new level."

"SDWC celebrates diversity and we are proud that this program offers the audience a musical experience that is diverse in both content and style. We are happy there will be songs that the audience will want to sing along to, but we're also very excited to introduce them to some lesser known but incredibly moving pieces," said Board President Carin Scheinin. "Of course, we are over the moon excited to welcome the Indigo Girls as special guests for this incredible event and we can't wait to have the opportunity to share the stage with them!"

Last year, in response to growing concern from the community, San Diego Human Dignity Foundation launched the Lesbian Health Initiative to address the disparities in services and resources for lesbians throughout San Diego County. The Initiative has two goals: to identify needs and resources throughout San Diego County, and to build an endowment to fund the current and future health needs of lesbians in San Diego County. Co-produced by SDHDF, Songs of Protest, Songs of Protest has received major sponsorships from San Diego Pride, The BCause Fund and generous individual San Diegan philanthropists.

Tickets to Songs of Protest, Songs of Peace go on sale to the general public on March 1, 2014 at 10am online via Ticketmaster and the Balboa Theatre box office. Ticket prices range from $30-$100. A limited number of VIP tickets that include premium seating and admission to the post-concert reception at the Hard Rock Cafe Gaslamp may be purchased directly by calling (619) 291-3383.

About the San Diego Women's Chorus

For over 25 years, the San Diego Women's Chorus (SDWC) has been singing to combat oppression and fight for equality. A non-audition lesbian and feminist identified community chorus established in 1987, SDWC has grown from 14 women singing around a piano in a living room to a vibrant group of over 100 women who rehearse weekly, produce two major concerts per year, and perform at numerous events in the San Diego community and beyond. Through musical expression the San Diego Women's Chorus encourages women's creativity, celebrates diversity and inspires social action. SDWC believes that the power of women and the power of music can affect positive change in individual lives, as well as communities at large. Through thought-provoking concerts and community outreach performances, the chorus serves the LGBTQA community and beyond with programming that honors and celebrates both the diversity and universality of the human experience.

The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation

The San Diego Human Dignity Foundation (SDHDF) is the sole community foundation in our region dedicated to the benefit of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. We fund programs and projects that promote equal treatment, tolerance, wellness, well-being, and above all else, human dignity. We work to strengthen LGBT organizations and leadership. We nurture philanthropic giving to support LGBT people and address important issues such as aging, arts and culture, health and wellness, youth and families, and civil rights.
