New White Paper Evaluates Novel Silicone Wound Dressing's Lab Performance

Validates new MediPlus silicone comfort foam dressing's adhesion properties, ability to manage wound exudates.

ATLANTA, GA, March 01, 2014 (Press-News.org) MediPurpose(tm), a manufacturer and master distributor of medical products, today announced the publication of a white paper that describes a new advanced wound care dressing.

In-Vitro Laboratory Performance Results for MediPlus(tm) Silicone Comfort Foam: A Bordered Foam Dressing with Silicone Adhesive evaluates the results of a novel bordered foam dressing with silicone adhesive, a new addition to the MediPlus(tm) Advanced Wound Care products' specialty dressings portfolio from MediPurpose.

The study's primary objective was to validate the essential performance characteristics of the new MediPlus(tm) Silicone Comfort Foam dressing that contribute to the dressing's ability to manage wound exudates and remain in place at the wound site (wear time), said MediPurpose Wound Care Marketing Manager Valerie C. Johnson.

Johnson said key attributes of such performance specifically relate to total fluid handling capacity, absorbency and adhesion.

According to the white paper, MediPlus(tm) Silicone Comfort Foam exhibited acceptable and comparable total moisture handling capacity and adhesion performance to the predicate device for silicone-bordered foams, Mepilex(r) Border.

"As a new entrant into the marketplace, evidence of expected clinical performance should be provided to healthcare providers," said Johnson. "The relevance of such testing -- performed by an Independent Accredited Laboratory -- conveys the expected performance of this dressing when included as part of the wound care treatment plan."

Johnson said silicones were first introduced in the early 1980s as premium products and used for patients with challenging wounds, particularly since the dressings could be removed without causing additional pain or damage to the wound or to the surrounding skin.

"This is especially important since there is now a need to demonstrate patient-centered outcomes," said Johnson. "Putting patients at the center of care includes consideration of their personal preferences and providing options for less painful treatment procedures, such as dressing changes. In other words, a truly patient-centered wound care program strives to provide higher quality wound care, improve patients' experiences and also helps to improve financial efficiency."
