NEW YORK, NY, March 14, 2014 (Press-News.org) RE/Mixed Media Festival and The School of Media Studies at The New School are pleased to announce RE/MIXED MEDIA FESTIVAL IV, taking place Saturday & Sunday, April 26-27 at The New School and CultureHub in downtown Manhattan, NYC. Registration, which runs from $5.00 to $500.00, is available through the website at remixnyc.com. Full festival passes are available for $20 for those registering using Bitcoin; and those registering before April 1 will receive a 50% reduction on registration.
RE/MIXED MEDIA FESTIVAL IV features an exciting array of work across and within a variety of disciplines. The festival will feature film and video screenings, lectures, panel discussions, theatrical presentations, musical performances, visual and audio installations, painting, and hands-on workshops. The festival builds on the success of the previous three festivals, and promises to spark lively discussions about remix in all forms of art.
This year, for the first time, RE/MIXED MEDIA FESTIVAL IV will take place over 2-days, and feature works from artists around the world, including these featured events:
• Keynote Speech by Lev Manovich For decades, Dr. Manovich has been considered a thought leader in new media art and theory. He's best known for his seminal 2001 book, The Language of New Media, which has been called "the most suggestive and broad ranging media history since Marshall McLuhan." His most recent book, Software Takes Command, was published in 2013.
• The Imaginary App - An international art and design exhibition, curated by Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky, and Svitlana Matviyenko, editors of The Imaginary App, an anthology of art and scholarship on app-computing. Artists and designers were invited to submit entries for a traveling art exhibition and publication of selected works in their forthcoming anthology. The exhibition will feature original icons of nonexistent apps.
• "Reality Hunger" - a talk by author David Shields. David Shields, author of the acclaimed literary mash-up Reality Hunger (2010) will deliver a talk on this landmark work at RE/Mixed Media Festival IV. The talk will be given at 1PM on Saturday, April 26th at The New School's Lang Center, 55 West 13th Street, in Manhattan's Greenwich Village. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.
• The Vermeers screening. This short film by Tal S. Shamir was the winner of the 2011 Student Oscar (Gold Medal, Alternative Category.) The Vermeers suggests a contemporary engagement with Jan Vermeer's paintings (1632-1675) via a digital platform. It is an attempt to merge content of the art-film with the structure of the film-trailer. The desire is to contemplate on Vermeer's paintings from a different and unexpected POV - loyal to the source but true to the technological evolution.
• Open Media Systems - a panel discussion. A pattern across the web is emerging, in which members of particular communities create, share + remix content of particular digital media types, on platforms designed specifically to support them and their unique needs. This discussion will examine these Open Media System and the three key elements they share: 1) a community of people who openly share their creations, 2) the infrastructure of the platform, designed with stream-like behaviors, and 3) the knowledge base of content resulting from the communities' interactions and collaborations.
The RE/MIXED MEDIA FESTIVAL is an annual celebration of the art of remix. Digital technology has empowered artists and consumers alike to access media creation tools that were previously limited to professionals. The result is an explosion of creativity--of remixes, user-generated content, and art that pushes the limits of copyright and tinkers with the premise of intellectual property. Founded in 2010, the RE/MIXED MEDIA FESTIVAL aims to bring public awareness and generate conversation around the vibrant art and practice of remix. The first festival in 2010 was a huge success where festival goers enjoyed appearances by Moby, Steinski, Ricky Powell, Sweatshoppe, Deanna Zandt, Jesper Juul, and over 50 other artists, performers, musicians and DJs. In each subsequent year, the festival has grown in scope and breadth, and in 2014 is proud to welcome The School of Media Studies at The New School as a primary partner.
