Janis Smith Recognized by Worldwide Branding for Excellence in Forensic Science

IGNACIO, CO, March 17, 2014 (Press-News.org) Janis L. Smith, Coroner for the County of La Plata, Colorado, has been recognized by Worldwide Branding for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in forensic science.

Ms. Smith's profession as a coroner allows her to help families who have experienced the loss of a loved one by determining the departed's cause of death. It also requires her to be on call 24/7 as an investigator and initial responder to any criminal, suspicious, or unintended deaths and suicides. Ms. Smith oversees the daily operations of coroner's office, assists in autopsies, and conduct follow-ups regarding cases. She also lectures on the topic of forensic science and provides consulting services.

Prior to working in this capacity, Ms. Smith was an Emergency Medical Technician for 18 years. She then attended a law enforcement academy, and worked for the Southern Ute Police Department while working as the coroner of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe for six years. Ms. Smith has a combined total of 26 years of experience in law enforcement and forensics. She is certified investigator, designated by the Colorado Coroners Association, and a registered medicolegal death investigator, designated by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators.
