The Overflow Project Kicks Off 50-Day Challenge with Art Installation in Seattle
2014-04-12
SEATTLE, WA, April 12, 2014 (Press-News.org) The Overflow Project is inviting people into a new way of living this spring with a 50-Day Challenge to simplify, give, and change lives. The nonprofit is hosting a special reception and art installation at Impact Hub Seattle from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, to build awareness about this tangible way to respond to the global water crisis.

"The installation part of this year's 50-Day Challenge is a piece of art designed to remind us that, at a time where nearly anything can be bought and disposed, nearly 1 billion people live without the fundamental privilege of clean drinking water" said Brian Wolters, founder and executive director of The Overflow Project. "Clean water is a basic necessity for human life and development." "We are grateful Samuel Stubblefield (http://digital-physical.com/) and Artist Reformation (http://artistreformation.com) have created this piece of art to help share our vision."

The Overflow Project is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization changing the world through simple living and generous giving. It brings communities together for collective change to help end poverty by supporting clean water projects in developing countries.

"We asked our friends, our families and ourselves what we could do without. We collected some of those things to display for you. This odd assemblage aims to trigger thought around your ability to make small changes that have huge impact on others," said local artist Samuel Stubblefield, who created the art installation along with artist Jeff Bettger from Artist Reformation, which mobilizes people to connect and create in community.

The Overflow Project's 50-Day Challenge begins on April 20 and runs through June 8. Participants are encouraged to simplify a habit in their life in order to save $1 or more each day of the challenge. On Day 50, participants give and overflow the money they have saved in order to provide sustainable clean water sources that will people's change lives.

One hundred percent of the funds donated through the 2014 50-Day Challenge will be given to global relief and development agency World Concern for clean water, sanitation, and hygiene training programs in Olemegili village in Kenya.

New protections sought for temporary construction workers in California

2014-04-12
Nearly 200 construction workers had a close brush with danger last month when a parking garage they were constructing in California suddenly collapsed. Workers were pouring concrete on an upper level and noticed something was not quite right. All of them immediately vacated the construction site just before an upper floor and the scaffolding collapsed. None of the 20 firefighters who responded to the call were injured either. Some people are not so lucky as to escape harm during construction site accidents. While the construction industry is booming in areas around the ...

Avoid a personal tax audit by addressing potential red flags

2014-04-12
Many individuals across the nation already completed their tax filing obligations -- or gave themselves extra time by filing extensions -- but the tension is still hanging in the air. For many, this time of year is fraught with nervousness regarding a potential audit by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Filers in California are in the spotlight each year as they file a higher number of federal tax returns than do other states, according to the IRS Databook. An IRS audit can take months or years to complete and is often a harrowing experience. Not only is an audit a ...

New Obama initiative could help misclassified workers get overtime pay

2014-04-12
Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, employers are required to pay nonexempt workers an overtime rate for hours worked in excess of 40 during a given workweek. The overtime pay rate must be at least one and one-half times the employee's normal hourly wage. There is no shortage of high profile unpaid overtime cases currently working their way through California courts. Hollywood has been no stranger to unpaid overtime cases, particularly among interns, but in a new suit filed in early 2014, a prominent video editor claimed he and other employees were denied proper overtime ...

Report: Cellphones involved in over one-quarter of all car accidents

2014-04-12
Recently, the National Safety Council (NSC) released its much-anticipated annual "Injury Facts" report. While the report did contain some statistics that were not terribly surprising to most - such as the fact that the period around New Year's has the highest percentage of drunk driving fatalities - some of the other findings within the report were quite alarming. For instance, it discovered that an estimated 26 percent of all motor vehicle accidents involve some type of cellphone use, which includes not only texting while driving but also talking on phones while behind ...

Important Internal Revenue Service issues for California businesses

2014-04-12
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) has caused numerous concerns for small businesses across the nation in the past few years. Changes to guidelines and delays in implementation of various portions of the ACA have caused some confusion for those trying to make financial decisions that will help keep their companies in the black. Originally, the employer mandate provision required employers with more than 50 employees to provide health insurance to all of their employees beginning in 2014. That deadline was first bumped back to 2015 and, as of this February, ...
