April 12, 2014 (Press-News.org) Conversations divorcing parents should have with their children

When couples are involved in the divorce process, it is sometimes easy to lose sight of the ways in which their decisions affect others. In many cases, the people who are most affected by a couple's decision to divorce are their children. Even though it can be difficult, parents should take time to have some essential conversations with their children about the dissolution of their parents' marriage.

First, most children's natural response to hearing that their parents are divorcing is to think that it is somehow their fault. Indeed, as children struggles to understand and accept what is happening, they will sometimes seek answers within themselves. No matter a child's age, it is essential that parents remind him that he is not responsible for their decision to end their marriage. No matter what, both parents should make it clear that they love their children and that divorce does nothing to change that.

Second, children whose parents are divorced often feel caught in the middle. If, for example, they enjoy an activity with one parent, it may make them feel guilty for not spending time with their other parent. Couples should strive to allow their children to develop an independent relationship with each parent. This can help ensure that each parent has a healthy, secure relationship with their children.

Third, it can be difficult for children to accept their parents' decision to get divorced and this can cause them to feel responsible for fixing their relationship. In some cases, hearing complaints from one parent about the other can exacerbate these feelings. Parents should avoid having conversations with their children about the factors that caused them to move on. The reality, of course, is that most marriages end due to factors that existed for a very long time.

Finally, it is important for parents to tell their children that life goes on. It may not seem like it at first, but divorce can be a positive thing for all those involved. More than anything else, it is an opportunity to start the next phase of life with a clean slate.

Those who are considering whether to divorce their spouses should speak to an experienced divorce attorney. A divorce attorney can walk you through the divorce process, provide you with information about steps to protect your assets and help you proceed.
