CHICAGO, IL, April 19, 2014 (Press-News.org) Budding bunions aren't something to scoff at. A bunion is an unnatural bump at the base of the big toe. If it's unnatural, it's only natural to treat it, especially if you experience pain while walking. Since it is a "bony bump," foot creams can't fix it. To alleviate pain during daily activities, roomy shoes, bunion pads and non-prescription pain medicine are used to decrease the pressure placed on the bunion. However, nonsurgical treatments don't always produce the desired outcomes.

"If a bunion is progressive, surgical removal of the bone deformity may be required. When nonsurgical methods aren't working, patients can turn to bunion surgery, formally known as bunionectomy," says Dr. Stein, Chicago, IL podiatrist.

A bunionectomy accounts for two types of procedures: head and base treatment. A head procedure targets the bone just behind the big toe joint. If a bunion is causing a patient to be immobile at frequent times during the day, a head procedure may be required. Base procedures involve cutting part of the bone, allowing the it to be properly aligned with the toe joint.

"Like every treatment option, there will be limitations. A successful bunion surgery requires an experienced surgeon, combined treatment plan and realistic expectations. Preventative care is key to fighting off inflammation and pain, but there is always a chance a bunion can reoccur," explains Dr. Stein.

By having realistic expectations, Dr. Stein means that bunion surgery can't guarantee a patient will be pain-free or bunion-free. Post-treatment care is critical to the success of a bunion surgery.

To reduce the chance of getting another bunion, Dr. Stein recommends that patients make lifestyle changes, such as avoiding ill-fitted shoes. Dr. Stein and his staff create customized treatment plans for each patient.

Are nonsurgical treatments not helping? To schedule a consultation for bunion surgery in Lincoln Park, call Dr. Stein's office at (773) 477-3668. 2014-04-19
While plantar fasciitis might be one of the most common foot problems, this doesn't mean that one type of treatment works best for everyone. It's normal for patients to respond differently to treatment, which is why the doctors at the Foot & Ankle Institute utilize a number of solutions for plantar fasciitis. One may ask, what is plantar fasciitis? It's commonly refereed to as "heel pain," but the formal name comes from plantar fascia, which is the band of tissue that connects the toes to the heel bone. Santa Cruz Dentist Wants Patients To Spring Into Action For Better Oral Health

2014-04-19
Many people will never experience a broken bone. It's a less common incident, which is why it's considered an emergency. The same can't be said for dental emergencies. Teeth and gums are put in harms way every day. The food and drinks people consume can produce bacteria and acid that are harmful to tooth enamel. "People consider cavities a common dental problem, not an emergency. However, certain stages of tooth decay can be considered a major concern, especially if a tooth's structure is damaged due to severe dental decay. Ignoring dental hygiene practices at home ...

Kenosha Dentist Discusses How Age Factors Into A Successful Dental Implant

2014-04-19
In recent years, missing permanent teeth are more often being permanently replaced by dental implants-a type of restorative procedure. Unlike dentures and dental bridges, dental implants require a surgical incision into the gum tissue and jawbone, so a dentist can place the screw-like implant. This allows for the jawbone cells to attach to the implant, the process also known as osseointegration. The advantages of a dental implant include permanence, esthetic appeal, comfort and convenience. A patient can treat it with care just like his/her natural teeth, and the jawbone ...
