North Bennet Street School Student Wins 'Best of Show' at Prestigious Furniture Competition
2010-12-06
BOSTON, MA, December 06, 2010 (Press-News.org) Budding custom furniture maker Austin Campbell of Cashmere, Washington took top honors for student work at the 13th annual Fine Furnishings Show held recently in Providence, Rhode Island.

Campbell's serpentine corner table was awarded Best of Show for a traditional piece created by a student - one of dozens of traditional and contemporary student furniture pieces entered in this year's competition.

The award is Campbell's crowning achievement of his two years of training at the renowned North Bennet Street School (www.nbss.edu) in Boston. He will graduate in June 2011 from the school's cabinet and furniture making program, one of eight craft-training disciplines offered by the 125 year-old institution.

Campbell's award-winning table is based on furniture design of the Federal period, and is made of South African mahogany. The piece features a ribboned mahogany pattern on top, fan-shaded holly inlays along the serpentine front, and tapered hand-reeded legs.

The table (and a matching twin also crafted by Campbell) is currently available for purchase through the school's Gallery store at the corner of North Bennet and Salem streets. Inquiries can be made in person, by phone (617-227-0155, ext. 110) or online at gallery@nbss.edu.

One of the country's oldest schools for craftsmanship training, the North Bennet Street School is known internationally for its rigorous teaching methods, and for its role in promoting the preservation of traditional craft skills. For more information about the school, visit www.nbss.edu.
