WINTER PARK, FL, September 01, 2010 (Press-News.org) Stratos Jet Charters Inc., a worldwide air charter agency, recently improved its North to South jet charter service by inviting one of the most reputable private jet operators in the Ft. Lauderdale area to join the Stratos Jets' Approved Vendor Program. Stratos Jets can now provide on-demand jet charter service for New England to South East routings on eight of the safest and most highly-maintained private jet aircraft.
The mission of the Stratos Jets' Approved Vendor Program is to ensure that every Stratos Jets vendor meets or exceeds with the highest safety expectations in the air charter industry. To become a member of the program, the Ft. Lauderdale-based operator was required to demonstrate its compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Department of Transportation (DOT) and Stratos Jets' aircraft, maintenance and flight crew standards. These requirements were set forth to ensure the safety and quality of every jet charter flight.
To become an official Stratos Jets approved vendor, the South Florida aircraft operator was also required to demonstrate its commitment to air charter safety by maintaining extremely high levels of aircraft insurance. These insurance levels require a minimum of $25 million of liability insurance on all turboprop aircraft and $50 million on all other private jet aircraft. By maintaining a high level of aircraft insurance, aircraft operators show a higher level of commitment to passenger safety and aircraft maintenance standards.
Stratos Jets' newest vendor met these insurance requirements by maintaining a minimum of $50 million of liability insurance on every private jet aircraft and $25 million on every turboprop aircraft. These aircraft include three Beechjet 400s, a Gulfstream G200, a Jetstream 41, two King Air 200s and a Cessna Caravan. The Gulfstream G200 charter jet, in particular, is one of the most desirable jets for North to South charter flights because of its luxurious cabin amenities and extended range capabilities. The Gulfstream G200 can seat nine passenger comfortably over a range of 3,835 nautical miles; ideal for non-stop jet charter flights from New York City to Miami, Florida.
According to Joel Thomas, president of Stratos Jet Charters, the addition of the South Florida operator to the Approved Vendor Program enables his air charter agency to arrange one-way jet charter flights from the North to South, especially valuable during the fall and winter months. Thomas said that the demand for jet charter flights from northeast locations to warm, southern vacation destinations such as South Florida is at its highest from September to January.
"When the weather gets cold in the Northeast, many air charter consumers charter private jets to the South," Thomas said. "This reduces the number of private jets available for charter flights from the North to South. Through the new vendor relationship, Stratos Jets can offer more North to South private jet charter flights during the hectic fall and winter travel seasons."

South Carolina Sentencing Reforms: A New Reality-Based Public Policy
2010-09-01
Earlier this summer, South Carolina became the latest state to adopt sentencing reforms aimed at reducing penitentiary expenses. South Carolina's prison population rose abruptly from just over 9,000 inmates in 1983 to more than 24,000 by the end of 2009, with steep future increases projected. Over the same interval, the state prison budget rose from $63.7 million to almost $400 million. Despite this massive public investment, rates of violent crime and recidivism in the state have remained high.
According to The Pew Center on the States, spending on corrections throughout ...
The Widespread Effects of Leandra's Law

Despite a flood of protest from local governments, a provision of Leandra's Law requiring ignition interlock devices for all New York drivers convicted of DWI is set to soon go into effect. These devices connect the ignition of an offender's vehicle to a breath alcohol analyzer, and prevent the vehicle from starting if the driver does not pass a breath test. As of August 15, every New York county is required to adopt a comprehensive ignition interlock program.
Some local governments, while optimistic about the law's intended effects, are worried about the financial ...
European Court Decision Advances Fathers' Rights
2010-09-01
A recent decision by the German Constitutional Court provides that men who father children out of wedlock need not obtain the mother's consent to seek legal custody. The court heeded a 2009 European Court of Human Rights ruling that German family law was inconsistent with a European directive to respect and sustain family life, and it also ran afoul of anti-discrimination laws. The interests of a German child in having a relationship with an unmarried father can no longer be subsumed by the mother's parental rights.
Some German conservatives decried the judgment, arguing ...

School Bus Seat Belts Again in Debate
2010-09-01
Recently, two school buses were involved in a serious accident in Missouri. One student was killed, as was the driver of another vehicle involved in the accident, and over fifty students were injured in the crash. The incident renewed the debate over whether school buses should have seat belts installed and whether those belts would make buses any safer.
The crash occurred when a pick-up truck rear-ended a semi that had stopped for construction traffic. One of the school buses collided with the pick-up and was then struck from behind by the other bus.
