Dreamstar Custom Homes Raises and Donates $45,000 to Komen South Florida Affiliate

"Build for the Cure," spearheaded by Dreamstar Custom Homes President Brett Handler, raised $45,000 to benefit the South Florida Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure .

2010-12-16
STUART, FL, December 16, 2010 (Press-News.org) Dreamstar Custom Homes is making dreams come true for some of the medically underserved who are in a battle with breast cancer. "Build for the Cure," spearheaded by Dreamstar Custom Homes President Brett Handler, raised $45,000 to benefit the South Florida Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure . He recently presented a check to its executive director, Anita Holmes.

This past February, Handler initiated the "Build for the Cure" project by cutting his price for a home that was under construction and donating the difference to the local Komen affiliate. He asked his subcontractors and suppliers to do the same and the response was overwhelming, despite economic challenges — especially in the construction industry. PGT Windows & Doors, Distinctive Kitchens & Baths, Tile Market/Antico Stone, Jade Home Decor, Southern Waste Systems, Kohler, Centerpoint Construction, Abundant Energy, Cataldo & Son Plastering, Inc., Gale Insulation, Palm Beach Window & Door, Buckeye Plumbing, Ibis Golf Club and Colorwheel Paint all participated in the project.

"In this economy, undertaking a project like this is unheard of, a labor of love, and we are very grateful to Dreamstar Custom Homes," said Holmes. "This donation will go a long way. It's an immense help. The only thing bigger than this check are Dreamstar's hearts."

According to Holmes, for the medically underserved, $45,000 can cover 450 mammograms for women and men or 100 mammograms, 25 surgical biopsies and cancer treatment for up to eight patients.

Handler was motivated to initiate this project because cancer has struck his family personally. "My wife Chris lost her mother to breast cancer when she was only 4-years-old," said Handler. "We are passionate about helping the Komen organization and are pleased that so many of our subcontractors and suppliers joined us."

William and Lisa Byrnes, who purchased the home at Ibis Golf & Country Club, agreed to allow Dreamstar Custom Homes to dedicate their residence as the 2010 Build for the Cure benefit home. This elegant Tuscany-style custom built home — situated with a view of the lake and three fairways — features designer finishes throughout and includes many energy efficient features that Handler, a Certified Green Professional, has adopted as a building philosophy. The one-story home includes three bedrooms, four baths, an office, living, dining and family rooms, a gourmet kitchen and a wine cellar and bar.
