BROOKLYN, NY, December 17, 2010 (Press-News.org) At the Gateway Marina, Victor Mooney of Forest Hills, ocean rowboat christened "never give up" will be pick-up by Maersk Line for an ocean shipment to the Port of Mindelo in Cape Verde. Cape Verde is an archipelago of islands located about three-hundred miles west of Senegal. Mooney will be making his third and last attempt to row to New York's Brooklyn Bridge beginning in February 2011.
Having lost one brother to AIDS and another battling the disease, Mooney hopes to encourage HIV/AIDS testing to care and prevention. A second component of this journey is designed to raise the awareness of global warming.
"On December 20th, we plan to honor the Nordic Countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Finland) for their great stewardship towards the environment ", said Mooney at his home. "During this row across the Atlantic Ocean, we'll encourage people to plant trees in their community and utilize renewable energy", Mooney added.
Mooney's 17' custom made rowboat will be powered by solar panels and an Air Breeze wind generator. The 45-yr old veteran rower will carry an assortment of Duracell rechargeable batteries for his gps, Princeton Tec LED lights, mp3 recording devices, clock and label maker. He'll also have netbook to receive weather reports, send photos, exchange emails and practice a few languages courtesy of Rosetta Stone. Over seventy companies are currently supporting this mission.
