GLASGOW, SCOTLAND, December 22, 2010 (Press-News.org) How do Santa Claus and his elves produce enough presents in time for Christmas each year? A world class software company has produced a simulation game to let you find the answer.
The simulation allows players to experiment with running the magic production line to ensure there are enough presents for all the children in the world. Players can even test what happens if things change - if more children are good, if the elves want holidays, go on strike or if the magic elf machines break down.
The online simulation (www.SIMUL8.com/santa) is already proving a huge hit with customers and staff of software company SIMUL8 Corporation in the run up to Christmas.
If the player is successful then all the children get their presents and if the elves finish early they can even have a holiday. But if you don't work out how to run the magic production line efficiently then you find out exactly how many disappointed children you would have.
The idea is the festive brainchild of designers at the HQ of SIMUL8 in Boston. Frances Sneddon, Chief Technology Officer, said: "It started as a bit of Christmas fun but we have set it up using real numbers.
"It is based on the actual number of children in the world with the player running Santa's production line getting to decide how many toys each child should get. But we've guessed the number of good children!
"It's a great example of a high risk situation where you don't want to experiment with the real process because the impact of getting it wrong is huge."
SIMUL8 software is used in businesses and organizations all over the world to work out how to improve processes like productions lines, risk free.
Frances Sneddon said: "SIMUL8 is like a flight simulator for your business. What if, like Santa, you have to meet an increased demand without increasing costs? You have to be clever about what you do.
"For example General Motors increased throughput in its car plant by 5% without increasing costs. They did it by using simulation to be clever about how they scheduled their machine maintenance, meaning there was less down time.
She added: "You can have a simulation of just about any process - the New Zealand Inland Revenue reports their simulation to be accurate within 2% of the real thing."
The Santa simulation game is available to play online at http://www.SIMUL8.com/santa.

Tying Pricing Performance to Sales Incentives
2010-12-22
Smart business executives have always tried to hold sales representatives accountable for performance, and the simplest - and therefore most common - way is to set revenue targets: the more money a sales rep brings in for the company, the more she takes home in the form of a bonus.
This is a good start, but measuring revenues alone does not ensure that salespeople will make profitable pricing decisions at the point of sale.
Example: Sally Salesperson sells 100,000 bearings in a year, and she charges $3.00 per bearing. She achieves $300,000 in revenue for the company, ...
