NHA TRANG, VIETNAM, December 25, 2010 (Press-News.org) Tet Festival takes place at the start of the Vietnamese Lunar New Year and is celebrated across the country with families and friends coming together to enjoy three days free from work and responsibilities.
Vietnamese families reunite and exchange gifts on the first day of the three day celebration, which starts on 14 February 2011 and also marks the beginning of spring.
Vietnamese people believe that the first day of Tet will determine their fortunes for the coming year. Therefore, they go to great lengths to ensure that they start the year on the right foot. Houses are cleaned and painted in preparation and brand new clothes are worn on the first day of the celebrations. Families ensure that all old debts are paid on this day and take care to avoid arguments.
Families attend the pagoda or church to pray for good fortune on the morning of the first day of Tet and Hoa Mai - a yellow blossomed sprig - is used to decorate homes.
Visitors staying in hotels in Nha Trang can attend celebrations at temples in the city or stroll along streets lined with coloured lights and red signs which read "Chuc Mung Nam Moi" (Happy New Year). Street vendors sell traditional cakes, fruit and flowers.
