HARROGATE, ENGLAND, December 25, 2010 (Press-News.org) Staff at a leading Yorkshire renewable energy business are literally "flushed with pride" after their work to create a green electricity system at a public convenience has scooped a top national award.
The work Clean Energy (Yorkshire) undertook at the Fisher Street toilets, in Knaresborough, has been recognised by the British Toilet Association, which has named the amenities Best Eco Friendly Facilities in the Loo of the Year Awards.
The company, headed by husband and wife team Spencer and Tamsin Cassidy,
were commissioned by the local authority to install a solar photovoltaic (PV) system that would not only reduce energy costs, but also meet local conservation area regulations.
To meet the challenge the team fitted a total of 15 solar tiles, as opposed to solar panels, capable of generating 1kw of power to the toilets.
The system uses the sun's rays to create electricity through the solar tiles, which can generate electricity even on dull, cloudy days. This green electricity helps power lights and hand driers within the lavatories reducing the authority's energy bills.
Clean Energy's managing director Spencer Cassidy said: "We are thrilled that our work has resulted in these public toilets winning a national eco award.
"This wasn't a straight forward installation as the toilets are located in a conservation area. That's why we chose solar tiles as opposed to solar panels as they sit flush to the roof, lessening the visual impact.
"We hope this award will be the first of many for both Clean Energy Yorkshire and the important environmental work we do."
A total of GBP150,000 was spent on the entire project. The toilets, which are free with 24-hour access, now include family facilities and a small office for the attendant.
Further details about the Clean Energy (Yorkshire) range are available from its website http://www.cleanenergy-uk.com, or by calling Spencer and his team on 01423 541 315.
