Calgary Mall Handles Air Quality Control Complaint

Alberta Safety and Environmental Services solves air quality problem at local mall.

2010-12-30
CALGARY, AB, December 30, 2010 (Press-News.org) Alberta Safety and Environmental Services (ASE Services) was called to investigate an indoor air quality complaint at a retail outlet in a popular Calgary mall. Complaints had been made by customers and staff for nearly two years regarding a strong sour egg smell that emanated from within the store. Several environmental consulting companies were called to investigate the issue, but ASE Services was the first company able to determine the cause of the problem.

John MacDonald, Principal of ASE Services was brought in mid September to conduct a hygiene investigation. He was able to eliminate certain possibilities, allowing him to determine the source of the smell in four days. He explains that "Hygiene assessments involve eliminating the suspected to identify the unknown." In conjunction with Owen Construction Limited, they discovered that the shop's bathroom vent pipe had been improperly installed and was distributing sewer gas into the ceiling space above the store. Owen Construction Limited was able to repair the vent pipe installation and the air quality has since improved.

"I found this one interesting because there were several companies in there before us who couldn't identify the source of the problem. Those types of challenging scenarios are the most interesting," concludes MacDonald.
