The Ice House All Star Comedy Show to Benefit Hillsides Charity

50th Anniversary Marks The Ice House as the Oldest Comedy Club

2010-09-03
PASADENA, CA, September 03, 2010 (Press-News.org) Marking its 50th anniversary, The Ice House prepares for another All Star Comedy Show to benefit Hillsides' children on Sunday, October 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Pasadena's legendary comedy nightclub, The Ice House will begin selling tickets through Ticketmaster on Friday, August 27.

The oldest operating comedy club in America, The Ice House Comedy Club has continuously run stand-up comedy for 50 years, featuring such acts as Robin Williams, Lily Tomlin, George Carlin, Steve Martin, Bob Newhart, Billy Crystal, Jerry Seinfeld, Jay Leno, David Letterman, George Lopez, Ellen DeGeneres, Tim Allen, and others too numerous to mention have all wowed audiences in its intimate 200 seat showroom.

Founded in1960 by Pasadena businessman Willard Chilcott, The Ice House quickly became "the" place to go. The club combined music and comedy and consistently gave audiences a good time at reasonable prices. Shortly after its opening, folk nightclub veteran and future icon, Bob Stane took over and guided the club through 18 magical years of music and comedy. In 1978, a group of business people that included Bob Fisher and Jan Maxwell Smith purchased the nightclub and established an all comedy format. In 1981, Fisher became the sole owner and continues the tradition of great respect for entertainers and audiences alike.

"I feel like my experience at The Ice House has been very humbling," said Fisher, who believes that the comedy nightclub belongs to San Gabriel Valley. "On a personal level, it's giving me more than my 15 minutes of fame. But most importantly, it's a place where people are treated with respect, dignity and honesty.

During its five-decade tenure, The Ice House has become a legend in the comedy industry and, in Pasadena, a generous supporter of Hillsides' mission. For the past eleven years, Fisher, recipient of Hillsides' Special Recognition Award, has donated all the proceeds of its anniversary show to Hillsides Volunteer Network.

Not only has Fisher brought laughter to more than four million people, his talent in captivating guests has brought laughter to Hillsides' children through the numerous activities this event supports. Recently, the Hillsides Volunteer Network members bid farewell to the summer by taking the children to an ice skating rink and treated them to a pizza lunch. In addition, Fisher has hosted the children living at Hillsides with a special performance and lunch.

Founded nearly a hundred years ago, Hillsides is a Pasadena residential treatment center and community-based social service agency that serves vulnerable children and families living in Los Angeles County.
