SANTA ANA, CA, August 13, 2010 (Press-News.org) THINK Together, the non-profit that got its start providing after-school programs, is recruiting 72 full-time AmeriCorps members who will be embedded at school sites served by THINK Together in eastern Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties. Interested applicants can find specific opportunities at http://THINKtogether.org/jobs.
AmeriCorps is a division of the Corporation for National and Community Service. AmeriCorps members serve through more than 3,000 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based and other community organizations just like THINK Together, helping meet critical needs in education, public safety, health and the environment. Typically, Corps Members may tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, or help communities respond to disasters.
This particular AmeriCorps program is nationally funded and designed by THINK Together to demonstrate that Stephen Covey's 7 Habits principles and practices can be used by students and young adults as the foundation for a "navigation system" that will provide long-term results to them as individuals and to their community.
THINK Together plans to engage 72 AmeriCorps members in a program designed specifically to service youth who consistently demonstrate risky behaviors and are in need of a mentor, an academic coach, and instruction on how to navigate specifically the world of school/education as well as life in general.
Each Member will work closely with a group of 8-10 identified students during both the school day and after school. The Member will work with students during the school day as both mentor and tutor, helping them to improve academic performance. In the after-school program, along with working on the 7 Habits, the Member will support youth in the completion of homework, participate in enrichment classes, etc. Members will combine students with risky behaviors and students that do not have these behaviors to help youth learn to work together, and so youth will have positive peer role models.
Members chosen to participate in the THINK Together program will be trained on Stephen Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, and the 7 Habits of Happy Kids.
These 7 Habits trainings are rooted in:
1. Personal Victory -- learning to be proactive, beginning with the end in mind, and putting first things first; followed by
2. Public Victory--thinking win-win, understanding others before insisting they understand you, synergizing with others, and of course the 7th habit which is sharpening the saw and continuing to learn and develop.
The 7 Habits lessons are intended to serve as a navigation system/guide to help youth make positive choices, which in turn will help with social and emotional development as well.

Consider Tax Impact When Negotiating Employment Suits or Severance

Every April, our collective stress level rises as we scramble to meet our tax deadlines. Particularly tricky federal tax issues come up when an employee either receives money from a lawsuit settlement with his or her employer, or severance pay upon leaving a job. In most situations both are taxable as income, but subtleties in the law create some exceptions.
Taxation of Settlements Generally
A settlement is an agreement reached between parties to a lawsuit. Usually the plaintiff receives money damages to compensate for his or her injury, and in exchange agrees to ...
