February 06, 2011 (Press-News.org) When you're sitting in your home on one of those sweltering hot South Florida days, the last thing you want to happen is for your air conditioning to breakdown. The saying "you don't know what you have until it's gone" certainly applies in this situation. Many of us don't even think about our home comfort systems until a problem occurs - on the hottest day of the year - as we're left scrambling to fix it. When put in this situation we're more apt to make quick decisions that lead to long-term mistakes.
According to Joe Canosa, General Manager of Lindstrom Air Conditioning & Plumbing, a local in air conditioning, heating, air quality and plumbing systems company, "One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is trying to repair old, broken systems instead of replacing them." Although repairing your existing system may be the least expensive immediate solution, older systems break down more frequently and consume more energy, costing you much more in the long run. Canosa states, "Cooling systems have come a long way and are much more efficient than even those of just a few years ago, so by replacing an older system you're saving yourself a lot of time, money and aggravation."
Another mistake homeowners make is when buying a new system; buying one that either is too big or too small. According to Canosa correctly sizing your system is crucial to your comfort and the efficiency of your system. An oversized system will cost you more to operate and may actually lower your home comfort. For example, an air conditioner that is too large for a home will cycle on and off more frequently, running up your utility bill, while leaving rooms cold and clammy. Similarly, if the unit is too small, it will run too often, causing premature wear and tear, while insufficiently cooling your home. Canosa states, "To determine the correct size unit for your home, it's important to enlist the help of a reputable home cooling specialist."
A third mistake homeowners make is not taking into consideration their long-term home comfort needs. Canosa reminds homeowners, "It's important to consider your budget when pricing out a new system, but also keep in mind that you may have this system for 10 - 15 years. With the high cost of fuel, to operate your system over its lifetime will likely be much more than the initial cost of the system. It's important to buy the most efficient system you can afford on your budget."
And lastly, if you leave the decision to replace your system to the last minute (when it's already broken down), it can cost you more. You won't have the luxury of looking at various options, from the decision of what type of system to install to which company installs and services your system. Canosa states, "If you're looking during the off season you may be able to find deals that manufacturers or service companies are offering. And right now, the federal government is offering a $300 tax credit for installing certain energy efficient cooling systems through the end of 2011."
Don't wait until your air conditioner goes out on the hottest day of the year and you're left scrambling to find a replacement. Avoid these common pitfalls that lead to long-term mistakes. Know your options ahead of time and make your decisions accordingly. You'll save yourself time, money and a lot of headaches in the long run!
