The first thing any trader wants to know about an automated trading system is, "is it profitable?" Before, it was difficult to determine whether an expert advisor was profitable over the long term. Now, you can determine the long term profitability of any expert advisor quickly and easily. The Walk Forward Analyzer for MetaTrader 4 (a MetaTrader 5 version will be released soon) uses MetaTrader's own Strategy Tester to perform a walk forward analysis. Program features include automatic calculation of optimization and testing periods, interactive result selection, autocomplete for 24 popular forex pairs, a quick optimize features that generates a settings file automatically, and more.
The walk forward analysis method was developed by Robert Pardo in his book The Evaluation and Optimization of Trading Strategies. To date, the walk forward analysis is the best method to determine the long term profitability of an automated trading system.
To perform a walk forward analysis, an optimization is performed on an automated trading system over a period of time. The best performing parameter set is selected, and a backtest is performed over a subsequent time period. The optimization and testing process is repeated a suitable number of times, and the results compared. A profitable trading system will show a backtesting profit that's at least 50% of the optimized profit.
