ST. PAUL, MN, February 16, 2011 (Press-News.org) Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN, has been verified as an Emergency Center of Excellence by Emergency Excellence, an organization specializing in emergency department benchmarking. Emergency Excellence developed the award in response the 2006 Institute of Medicine's call for emergency department improvement and to motivate emergency care providers to achieve a higher standard of quality.
Regions Hospital is the first academic medical center in the nation and the fourth hospital overall to qualify as an Emergency Center of Excellence. Eligibility for the Emergency Center of Excellence is based on the results of over 100 key performance indicators linked to seven Pillars of Excellence (Safety, Satisfaction, Space, Staff, Support, Systems, and Solvency). Emergency Excellence compares hospitals on emergency department performance and surveys physicians, nurses, hospital staff, medical staff, and administrators. The Emergency Center of Excellence award is verified after an on-site assessment.
"Regions Hospital's emergency department provides an excellent patient experience" says Mark Reiter, M.D. M.B.A., CEO of Emergency Excellence. "Regions also offers a robust emergency medicine residency training program, which in most hospitals creates challenges to providing efficient care. However, Regions Hospital far exceeds most emergency departments across dozens of clinical and operational benchmarks.
Kurt Isenberger, M.D., Medical Director at Regions Hospital Emergency Department notes, "We are honored to be recognized as an Emergency Center of Excellence. Regions' emergency department and hospital staff work very well together as a team. In particular, physician-nurse relationships are superb, which translates into excellent patient care."
