DENVER, CO, August 13, 2010 (Press-News.org) Crisanta Duran, Democratic candidate for Colorado State House of Representatives' 5th District (www.duranforcolorado.com), was declared the winner in yesterday's primary race.
Despite a series of negative attacks leveled by her opponent days before the election, Ms. Duran won in convincing fashion, garnering over 57% of the votes. She is expected to easily win the general election in November against a relatively unknown Republican opponent, positioning her to become the youngest Latina state legislator in Colorado's history.
"Over the past year, our campaign has knocked on thousands of doors in a countless number of neighborhoods across the district. The thing we heard again and again is that people are genuinely concerned about the shape of their neighborhoods and the state of the economy," said Ms. Duran. "We built a positive campaign around the promise of building bridges between all of our District's neighborhoods and to help get the economy back on track."
Ms. Duran served as Political Director for Senator Mark Udall in his successful 2008 U.S. Senate race where she effectively organized women, diverse community members, labor, seniors, and the LGBT community. In 2008 she was elected to serve as President of the Colorado Young Democrats and acted as a Democratic National Convention Delegate. Ms. Duran has also worked on legislation to promote workers' rights at the Capitol and negotiated contracts with multi-billion dollar corporations to provide stable wages and affordable health care to thousands of workers and their families throughout Colorado.
"I'm humbled, of course, by the overwhelming support our campaign received," says Ms. Duran. "But the race is not finished yet, we still have a general election to win. There's plenty of good work still to do in front of us."
