The festival, which often falls in April, is traditionally a time when Chinese families travel to the area where their ancestors are buried in order to honour their forebears.
Families take food and drink as well as a traditional zhigian paper offering that represents wealth to gravesites and ensure that the area is clean and well presented before enjoying a meal on the site.
