BATH, ENGLAND, March 25, 2011 (Press-News.org) David has spent much of his free time over the years walking in the mountains of Snowdonia and on the coastline of North Wales and Anglesey; and it is his response to this landscape that inspires much of his work. David has a growing reputation for his highly textured, evocative paintings of this cherished landscape; and for his enthusiastic, confident still life compositions.
David works with oils and a palette knife, with a thick impasto technique, and produces bold strokes that suit the often rugged nature of the landscape which is his principal subject. This method of painting adds strength and texture to his painting, giving it a sculptured feel and evoking the very character and personality of the landscape.
David generally uses a palette that reflects the often dark brooding colours of the North Wales landscape. However, he is increasingly using more vibrant colours and painting other landscapes that he loves - Scotland, Cornwall, West Wales and Ireland - and which will feature in the show.
He admires and is influenced by the work of the Welsh artist Sir Kyffin Williams, who used a similar impasto technique; but it is his response to the landscape of North Wales and Anglesey that has most inspired his work.
Carine Besse, Gallery Manager at the Red Rag Modern Art Gallery, comments, 'We are delighted to be hosting this one-man show for David, who has developed an inspiring body of work in a relatively short time. David imbues his paintings with a real love and feeling for the landscapes he knows so well; and he invites us to share that experience with him through his painting.'
David was born in Africa in 1942 and spent his early childhood there. He studied history and economics and qualified as an accountant. He has spent most of his working life in professional practice but also worked for the Open University writing course material and leading seminars in Europe and Africa on the MBA programme. Although he has been a collector of art for many years, he began painting professionally only after his retirement from the education world in 2006.
David has exhibited widely in the UK but this is his first solo exhibition with the Red Rag Modern Art Gallery. The show will run from Sunday, 17 April 2011 to Sunday, 01 May 2011.
Red Rag Gallery is a leading UK art gallery and specialises in British and Irish contemporary art, sculpture and limited edition prints. Red Rag Gallery represents many leading contemporary artists and sculptors and ships artwork worldwide. Red Rag has galleries in Stow on the Wold and Bath. The galleries are open every day. Opening hours are: 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday; 10am to 4pm, Sunday.
