The incidence of melanoma is growing rapidly in the United States but no new agents have been approved to treat the disease in 12 years. Prognosis for patients with stage III and IV disease remains poor, and there is little consensus on the standard of care. However, clinical research into new agents - eg, anti-CTLA4 antibodies, MEK inhibitors, and BRAF inhibitors - is active, and several of these compounds are being incorporated into treatment regimens. Many oncology nurses who care for patients with melanoma have already administered these new agents and have numerous questions regarding their efficacy, unique response patterns and toxicity profiles, how they may be integrated into current treatment regimens, and how to educate patients on their benefits and risks.
This symposium is intended to provide an overview of the evolving treatment options in advanced melanoma, safe novel therapy administration, and optimal side-effect management strategies.
IMER has conducted over 30 educational activities on melanoma for oncology nurses in 2010 and has collected nurse attendees' most frequently asked questions regarding the rationale behind new treatment approaches, the safety and efficacy of emerging agents, and optimal side-effect management and response monitoring practices. In the final session of the symposium, each table will be given a question for discussion. The faculty will then review each question, obtain responses from each of these groups and provide answers. Webcast participants will interact in their own question-and-answer session and responses will be given to the faculty as well for comment.
