Peter's Hardware Center in Palm City was among the sponsors of the recent 2011 Walk to Cure Diabetes-Treasure Coast event that raised more than $120,000. The event featured a 5K walk along Flagler Avenue in Flagler Park in downtown Stuart. Individuals and corporate teams walked, rollerbladed, biked and skateboarded. Even dogs on leashes walked and supported the cause!Peter Wernick, owner of Peter's Hardware Center, assembled a team of 15 people to walk, including five children. They raised a total of about $1,000. Prior to the event, store employees encouraged customers to support the walk by making a donation or forming their own team.
"We are pleased to be a part of the local community and to do our part for this worthy cause," said Wernick.
In an e-mail following the event, Lora M. Hazelwood, executive director of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, thanked all of the supporters and said, "The weather was perfect and we could not be more excited about the turnout — over 700 attendees.
"We just completed our ninth walk on the Treasure Coast. Next year will be our tenth anniversary and while we don't have a cure, we can celebrate the many valuable dollars that are supporting research and education for without, there would be no progress and no hope for those who have loved ones with type 1 diabetes."
The event was held to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International. JDRF is one of the most cost-effective agencies in the world, allocating at least 80 cents of every dollar to fund diabetes research and education to find a cure for diabetes.
