ROCKVILLE, MD, April 02, 2011 (Press-News.org) As its annual spring fundraising project, the Montgomery Alliance for Community Giving, http://www.montgomeryalliance.org, has pledged to raise $25,000 for Montgomery College's Combat2College Program.
Combat2College provides comprehensive, customized support services to veterans making the transition from the military to a college environment. More than 700 veterans are students at Montgomery College's three campuses.
"Our veterans have given so much, and they deserve the best our community can offer," says Charles Atwell, a Montgomery Alliance Board Member who chairs the campaign.
Combat2College provides supplemental services to veteran-students to cover expenses such as books, course materials, transportation, diagnostic services to identify previously undiagnosed learning differences and program assistance, he explains. "Supporting Combat2College certainly fits the commitment of Montgomery Alliance to local health and human service agencies, and we're proud to assist the program."
Atwell says the campaign is a joint initiative with the Montgomery College Foundation, which will match any funds raised by Montgomery Alliance.
To kick off the campaign for Combat2College, Montgomery Alliance has scheduled a special evening of Wine Tasting on Wednesday, April 20 from 6 to 8 p.m., hosted by Cafe 1894, 10417 Armory Ave., Kensington, MD 20895. Admission is $20 per person.
Now in its sixth year, Montgomery Alliance is an all-volunteer non-profit that supports local health and human service agencies. Its funds are generated by its annual fall pledge campaign in local companies, agencies and city and county governments. Montgomery Alliance has the lowest operating rate of County agencies at 5 percent, which means of every $1 contributed, 95-cents are distributed directly to the charities.
Montgomery Alliance has selected various projects to support each spring. In 2008, Montgomery Alliance's Book Buddies program collected books to distribute to low income youngsters. The children's waiting room at Montgomery County's Family Justice Center was outfitted and equipped by Montgomery Alliance supporters in 2009. Last year, the spring project raised funds and in-kind donations to re-build a playground for children with special needs at the ARC of Montgomery County.
To make a reservation for the wine tasting or for more information, contact Montgomery Alliance at montgomery4alliance@comcast.net or 301-990-3005.
