Thursday 28th April to Sunday 1st May 2011

The 2011 festival will be showcasing a mix of animation, comedies, dramas and experimental films. Screenings will take place from Thursday 28th of April 2011 to Sunday the 1st of May 2011 in Cambridge (UK) at Squeaky Gate (47-51 Norfolk Street, Cambridge).

Last year's festival was hailed a resounding success with more than 60 short films and a feature film. More than 20 filmmakers from around the world joined the festival for some great days of networking and films. With a long weekend of film screenings and talks - including an art installation and performance - this year's festival is set to be even bigger and better!

Special Screening

This year the festival will host a rare screening of Super Eight - a seminal 1986 documentary made for Channel 4 Television. The festival is delighted to welcome the programme's director, Jo Comino, who will be present to introduce the screening and take part in an audience Q&A. The event will take place on Saturday 30th April at 4.30pm.

Meet Directors

Each programme contains ten to fifteen short films from all around the world and there will be ample opportunities to network with visiting directors!

Film Workshop

This year, a guest filmmaker will lead a workshop on how to use a Super 8 camera and process the film with chemicals! No previous experience is needed and each participant will contribute to the making of a film which will be screened at the end of the festival. With limited places, the workshop offers an exclusive opportunity to learn from experts. It will take place during the day over Thursday 28th and Friday 29th April. Email workshop@cambridge-super8.org for more information and to book your place.

Industry Panel Discussion

Each year the Cambridge International Super 8 Film Festival hosts a panel discussion to examine the latest trends and practices relating to Super 8 and small format film-making. As the debate on how to transform our cultural and audio-visual heritage continues to bubble, this year's theme is titled: The Future of the Past: Film Preservation in the Digital Century. The panel discussion will take place on Saturday 30th April

What is Super 8?

Super 8 is an 8mm cartridge-based film system introduced by Kodak in 1965. The cartridges load straight into the camera, making it an easy to use 'home movie' format.

Who uses it?

Although technology has advanced massively, many filmmakers still like to use Super 8 for the saturated colours that make it famous. UK Directors Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, Spaced) and Shane Meadows (This is England, Dead Man's Shoes, Somers Town) are big fans. And it's helped a host of budding filmmakers: one of Tim Burton's first film escapades was shot on Super 8 when he was just 13-years-old. Other well-known directors also dabble, enjoying the medium's vignettes and old-fashioned feel. Oliver Stone, for example, often uses Super 8 to give a different look to his films, notably in The Doors, Natural Born Killers and JFK.
