SAN FRANCISCO, CA, April 11, 2011 (Press-News.org) This weekend, the San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) and the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) unveiled two new cell phone tours, powered by Guide by Cell.
The ArtPhone tour will lend insight into five newly commissioned public artworks and 20 works from the airport's collection which are on display at the revamped SFO Terminal 2. A second cell phone tour, the GreenPhone tour, will also be available for airport patrons to learn more about the sustainable design of the new terminal.
Both audio tours were recorded and produced by San Francisco-based Earprint Productions, a multimedia production company which provides mobile tours, apps and scriptwriting to the museum community.
Using their cell phones, travelers will be able to dial a provided number to listen to recorded tour stops featuring interviews with the five artists who created the Terminal 2 artworks, living artists whose work is part of the airport collection, and oral history interviews with internationally-renowned Bay Area artists Wally Hedrick, Lee Mullican and Roy Deforest from the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art.
"We are delighted to be able to provide travelers with the opportunity to learn more about this remarkable collection," said Luis R. Cancel, Director of Cultural Affairs for the San Francisco Arts Commission. "The ArtPhone tour brings the art to life with the voices of the artists and those who knew them. Travelers will also learn about the Bay Area's vibrant art scene from the 1960s through the mid-80s."
Travelers who wish to learn about the terminal redesign can dial in to the GreenPhone tour, which features interviews with renovation Project Manager Ray Quesada and Gensler designer Melissa Mizell.
"T2 has been designed for the comfort, convenience and enjoyment of today's modern traveler, and that sets it apart from most other U.S. airports," said John L. Martin, Airport Director of San Francisco International Airport. "T2 has WiFi, convenient work stations, a wide variety of San Francisco-based organic food, comfortable club-like seating, and other great features. The Guide by Cell audio tour is another amenity for travelers -- it's a convenient, unique and fun way to learn more about the airport."
"We are delighted to collaborate with the San Francisco Arts Commission on this mobile project," commented Dave Asheim, Founder and CEO of Guide by Cell. "Visitors to this beautiful new terminal want to know more about both the art and the sustainability design of the building. There is nothing more powerful and easier than taking your cell phone out, dialing a number, and hearing behind-the-scenes information straight from the experts."
