PLANO, TX, May 13, 2011 (Press-News.org) Plano Sprinkler company Collin County Sprinkler introduces a range of water-saving solutions to help solve water conservation issues in Texas. Water is fast becoming a critical issue as Plano, Frisco and North Texas have a booming population growth with no new sources of water.
According to the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD), water usage during the 2008-09 Water Year was 93.2 billion gallons of water compared to 78.1 billion gallons of water in 2006-7. Long term, the population of North Texas is estimated to grow from the current 1.6 million to over 3.8 million by 2060. Through a statewide water planning process, the NTMWD has identified numerous water management strategies to meet the long-term population growth. Conservation, the wise and efficient use of current water supplies, and reuse strategies are estimated to comprise more than 25 percent of the future water supply.
Steve Campbell, owner of Collin County Sprinkler was quoted as saying "as Plano sprinkler system contractors we want to provide our customers with a beautiful green lawn, keep their water bill to a minimum, and also help preserve our environment. Finally we can offer a range of solutions to do just that."
The latest solution to efficient landscape watering is to use soil moisture sensors. These products can be added to almost any existing system during a sprinkler repair, or at the time of a new sprinkler system installation. Once installed and calibrated the sensors need little further attention. Soil Moisture Sensors are sophisticated instruments capable of reliably and precisely measuring the water content of soil. The sensor is like the thermostat in a house. When the house gets cold, the furnace comes on. Similarly, when it gets dry, the sprinklers turn on. The sensor will not allow moisture levels to exceed saturation, so water will not be lost to the sub-soil. This one simple addition cuts landscape water usage on average by 50%, easily paying for itself in one to two years, depending on the size of a yard.
Soil moisture sensors are the logical development from irrigation systems that used a calculated figure called evapo-transpiration (ET) to adjust watering times. Factors that influence ET include wind, relative humidity, temperature, atmospheric pressure, soil composition, and plant type and growth. Needless to say, relying on historical data from different sites is not nearly as accurate as measuring actual conditions in the root zone of the landscaping.
As part of the range of water-conserving options, one other method of saving water is in the actual application of the water via the sprinkler heads. Delivery of larger water drops with less misting leads to more accurate watering patterns and less loss due to wind and evaporation. A typical precision nozzle can emit 33% less water than standard nozzles and have a 85% coverage efficiency, as opposed to a 63% coverage efficiency of standard nozzles. Precision nozzles can be installed on any existing spray head during a sprinkler repair, or with a new sprinkler installation. Obviously costs vary with each system, depending on the number of spray heads. It is important to note that sprinkler heads require the right water pressure to apply water as drops and not as mist. Excess water pressure can cause significant water loss. Precision nozzles along with pressure regulation can dramatically reduce landscape water usage.
The new soil moisture sensors, and precision nozzles, together with existing solutions including freeze sensors and rain sensors complete the portfolio. Collin County Sprinkler now offers a full range of water conserving solutions for Plano and surrounding areas, which will pay for themselves in lower water bills and a healthier and more beautiful landscape.
