DETROIT, MI, May 13, 2011 (Press-News.org) DMC Harper Bariatric Medicine Institute (Harper BMI) will host a free public educational seminar on weight management, in addition to Harper BMI's Comprehensive Detroit Bariatric Surgery Program. Guests will have the opportunity to learn about the different surgical and non-surgical weight management options. Guests will also have their questions about laparoscopic procedures and other forms of weight loss surgery answered by the experts.
The laparoscopic procedure, sometimes called gastric band surgery or lap band surgery, is the second most frequently performed bariatric procedure, where an adjustable band restricts the amount of food patients can ingest. A laparoscopic procedure can be performed as an outpatient procedure and the patient can typically leave the hospital in less than 24 hours.

At the seminar, board certified surgeon and medical director of bariatric surgery services for DMC Harper University Hospital, Michael M. Wood, M.D., will present important information on the latest surgical approaches to overcoming obesity and chronic diseases related to obesity. Bariatric surgery options presented will include the Lap Band, gastric sleeve and minimally invasive gastric bypass surgery, as well as the use of robotic technology for the bariatric procedure.
