Sweeney Teams Up With The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society To Battle Blood Cancers

Sweeney has a strong personal connection in racing to find a cure for blood cancers.

2010-09-15
ATLANTA, GA, September 15, 2010 (Press-News.org) Mike Sweeney Racing is teaming up with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) to help fight blood cancers. During the Rolex 24 At Daytona in February 2011, Sweeney will be racing on behalf of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. P1 Groupe, Sweeney's motorsports management company, will be working in conjunction with LLS in securing corporate partnerships on behalf of Mike Sweeney Racing and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Sweeney has a strong personal connection in racing to find a cure for blood cancers as he lost his Uncle Chris to the disease.

"I'm really excited about this opportunity," said Mike Sweeney. "It's a rare honor to be in a position to be a part of such a great organization, while getting to help them in such a noble pursuit. We are going to do everything in our power to help raise awareness and funding for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, in order to help them reach their ultimate goal of finding a cure for blood borne cancers. This is a fantastic group of people doing real and necessary good, to be even a small part of it is a thrill, and gives me extra motivation for next season!"

Sweeney is considered one of the up and coming stars in GRAND-AM racing and a strong fan favorite. He recently finished sixth at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres. Sweeney got a later start for his racing career than many of his sports car racing counterparts, but his determination and focus on the sport he loves has allowed him to make up a lot of ground on his competition in a very short period of time. He began his driving career as a substitute driver in a Porsche 356, bringing the car home in 7th position after spending several years Grand Prix's on his Honda RS 125 Road Racing Bike. Mike began building his driving resume behind the wheel of several Porsche's in historic events, consistently finishing at the front of his class. To date, only two years into his professional career, that career he longed for has taken off in the Continental Tire Challenge Series with the APR Motorsport VW GTi, and Compass 360 Honda Civic Si. Sweeney won back-to-back events in the series, including the first ever win for APR Motorsports and VW's first professional win as a manufacturer in over 25 years.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding research for the treatment and prevention of leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and improving the quality of life of patients and their families. The organization is comprised of 66 chapters across the United States and 2 branches in Canada. Their mission is carried out through research, education and services for patients with blood and other cancers. Society-sponsored research has led to groundbreaking improvements in treating the more than 850,000 Americans currently affected by these diseases.
