WINTHROP, MA, May 22, 2011
Yacht delivery skipper, captain of a 135' Mississippi River sternwheel cruise ship, life-long cruiser along the coast of Maine, author and speaker - Dave Roper will share Two True Tales from his collection of stories in his upcoming new book: "Watching for Mermaids".-- A family heads to sea to celebrate their parents' 50th wedding anniversary and unknowingly sails into their past, encountering a most bizarre Twilight Zone experience fifteen miles off the coast of Maine.
-- A couple chucks it all to 'live the dream', quitting their jobs, selling their house, cars and furniture, and even canceling their marina slip, to head off on a world voyage that lasts 21 hours, when they realize this means being out of sight of land.
Dave Roper is a professional writer and public speaker for over 30 years. For the past ten years, Roper is a regular columnist for Points East Magazine. His stories have also appeared in Cruising World, DownEast Guide, Lakeland Boating, Sail, Sailing. His new book, Watching for Mermaids, will be coming out this fall. Roper lives in Marblehead.
Pelagic Sailing Club's mission is to promote safety on the water, seamanship sailing, and good fellowship.
It's a great way to test the waters with a variety of boats if you're looking to buy a boat, otherwise crewing can be a lot of fun as well. Thirty-five percent of Pelagic's members are boat owners, the other 65% are crew. "As you can see," says Coles, "the percentage of crew to boat owners is high, so the club is looking for new boat owner applicants. Plus, it's an excellent way to meet other like-minded boaters."
