CLEVELAND, OH, May 23, 2011 (Press-News.org) http://www.mbma.com. The Metal Building Manufacturers Association (MBMA) annually recognizes metal building systems manufacturers who show exceptional commitment to assuring workplace safety. Safety Awards were presented at the MBMA Spring Meeting held May 1-3, 2011 in San Antonio, Texas.
"A total of 46 plant facilities participated in MBMA's Quarterly OSHA Injury Statistics Program," states Charles Praeger, Assistant General Manager of MBMA. "Awards were presented based on our analysis of the submitted data."
MBMA re-vamped their long-standing Safety Awards Program in 2010. They first appointed a Steering Committee that recommended the establishment of a Safety Committee and the development of a new Safety Awards Program. The new program is patterned after OSHA safety rules. Their previous program had run from fourth quarter to third quarter each year. The Steering Committee changed this to an annual award based on a calendar year. "They toughened up the standards too," says Praeger. In 2009, 29 plant facilities won awards. For 2010, 4 companies won the top awards. MBMA also created new awards that would recognize those firms who had achieved the greatest percentage in improved safety performance in various categories.
From the 46 manufacturing facilities nationwide that submitted data, 36 awards were presented - and some were given to multiple locations within the same company. MBMA patterned the awards program to conform to OSHA safety standards. MBMA's criteria, though, stipulates that winning firms must have work-related accident and illness rates that are significantly below OSHA-reported averages for the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Code 332311, which is Prefabricated Metal Building and Component Manufacturing.
For the Superior Overall Safety Record under the new rules of the Award
Program, the goal is to surpass 50% and greater than the national average for SIC
Code 3448. For this past year, the national average for recordable cases was 3.3
incident rate, down from the previous year of 6.3 for "Prefabricated Metal
Buildings and Component Manufacturing." A plant without a fatality within a company can qualify for an award.
In addition to recognizing a company in the Superior Overall Safety area, MBMA created a number of Safety Improvement Awards that recognize performance improvements in one of three categories:
• Achievement of a 20% Reduction in OSHA Work Case Occurrences plus Reduction in Restricted Duty Cases in 2010 over 2009;
• Achievement of a 20% Reduction in Other Recordable Cases in 2010 over 2009; and
• No Recordable Cases in 2010.

Gold has, historically, been the favorite choice for investors looking for a safe haven in times of inflation and falling currency values. As the buying power of the dollar decreases it is likely that gold will recover further. Analysts reported Wednesday that investors are remaining loyal to gold and silver, understanding that short-term losses are inevitable and that both metals still have a long way to go upwards. Midweek trading on ...
