BEVERLY HILLS, CA, June 05, 2011 (Press-News.org) 21st Century Formulations, makers of Skin MD Natural (http://www.skinmdnatural.com), the leading doctor recommended shielding lotion, have launched a "Stop the Burn" educational initiative to coincide with May, which is Skin Cancer Awareness month. With one in five Americans developing a form of skin cancer in their lifetime the initiative is aimed at encouraging everyone to be more diligent about using sun screen and practicing proper sun safety throughout the summer.
Sun safety is becoming increasingly more important with sun exposure being responsible for more than 90 percent of skin cancers. While other common types of cancer have seen a decrease in occurrences, skin cancer is increasing at an alarming rate with more than a million new diagnoses a year. Skin cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer and the "Stop the Burn" initiative is focused on decreasing skin cancer by educating Americans on sun safety, the dangers of skin cancer, and the importance of early detection.
Amber Humphries, spokesperson for the company, stated "Just one blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence can more than double a person's chances of developing melanoma later in life. The danger doesn't stop after adolescence; a person's risk for melanoma doubles if he or she has had more than five sunburns at any age. The scary truth about skin cancer is that one person dies of melanoma every hour. Melanoma accounts for less than 5% of all skin cancer cases but leads to 75% of deaths associated with skin cancer. Early detection plays in important role in survival rates. The survival rate for patients whose melanoma was detected before the tumor penetrated the skin is about 99% with that survival rate falling to 15% for those with advanced melanoma. Those who are lucky enough to survive need regular screenings for skin cancer as a previous melanoma diagnosis makes a patient nine times more likely as the general population to develop a new melanoma."
"Skin MD Natural wants to encourage people across the country to take the 'Stop the Burn' pledge and make proper sun protection a daily part of their families skin care routine," continued Ms. Humphries. "Properly using a sun screen with an SPF protection level of 15 daily can significantly decrease the risk of sunburn and help prevent the development of skin cancer. Besides encouraging people to take the 'Stop the Burn' pledge Skin MD Natural will be helping to make Americans more sun savvy about their skin care with sun safety tips all summer long."
To kick off the initiative Skin MD Natural was at the Fullerton, CA iCureMelanoma 5k run on May 21st, providing sun screen to participants running to raise funds for http://www.melanomacure.org.
